That's a lot a chickens...

Interesting tidbit I read not too long ago...
... the average egg laying chicken lays very near, what the average person eats in eggs per year... (I think it was like 270 eggs)...
That's a 1 to 1 ratio...
Unfortunately,... I also eat 5 or 6 chickens a year...
That's throwing the balance off...

Also... they are only good for laying for about 2 years, I think...
...and we don't eat egg layers..
Food chickens don't get 2 years... we eat them...

That pretty much sums up my knowledge of chickens...

Oh,.. and brown eggs are the same as white eggs... color is just based on the color of the chicken's neck...
Weird... :-?...

You'd think farmers would only use brown necked chickens nowadays...
... 'cause everybody thinks brown is healthier than white...
It's like a chicken racism... :-?...

High five for Obama,,
Regardless of the outcome of these investigations, the case raises questions about the tournament system, which may be fueling desperation among farmers. The Obama administration tried to ban the system in 2010 as part of a broader antitrust effort against meat companies. The U.S. Department of Agriculture proposed a rule that would give farmers a base pay level that couldn’t be undercut by the tournament rankings. The companies would be able to offer bonuses but couldn’t dock a farmer’s pay for poor performance. Meat industry lobbyists kicked into high gear and ultimately persuaded Congress to defund the measure.

Lobbyists kicked into bribery mode..

Well, if that fails, there are the backups.

Let me see if I get your beef (pardon the pun), but a guy commits a crime by killing farmers chickens and somehow this is the evil corporations fault.?  Isnt that just a variation of her skirt was too short or the car to pretty I just had to steal it?
That chicken grower wasn't bitching about Pilgrams when he was cashing checks....

Two separate issues I think. the guy that allegedly killed all the chickens and his motives, whatever they were, is one thing.

The goofy way the company pays the farmers is another. Kind of reminds me of the old share-cropping agricultural system in the south after the Civil War. Or the even older feudal system where the Lord of the Manor kept most of the crop and the serfs got what was left.

A modern, technological, version of the same idea.

True, but it looks like the person doing this was a poultry farmer, too, trying to out the competition, and the tournament system encourages this
If Pilgrims did business differently, there would be no motivation for a producer to do something like this

That's assuming that's the motivation here, I can think of another possibility; animal rights groups attacking the poultry industry
Either way it's a crappy way to do buiseness

That actually crossed my mind too, but I think those guys probably would have tried to turn the chickens loose. Killing them in order to save them is a little warped even for those nut-jobs.

30,000 chickens strolling down the road would have been quite a sight though :)

Those nut jobs have no problem killing domestic animals, even in horrible ways
they've been known to poison hunting dogs
30,000 chickens walking down the road would be hilarious
'chicken run' in real life

They pit the farmers against each other and pretend it's a fair fight, but the company doesn't know or care if each farmer gets equally healthy or equally genetically to be able to translate food.
It's not a very reasonable business for the farmers.
They're in debt, almost kiting checks the way it works.
It's awful.
I don't buy Pilgrims now, but if I did,I'd quit.

//AGREED

Makes me wonder though...
It's Kinda like hookers and johns.. isn't it. The ladies wouldn't sell what their customers wouldn't buy.  Yes, I am saying politicians are like johns. They are out there waving their (power) and offering it in trade.

I thought the politicians were the hookers, after all they take the money and provide the 'service'

I don't know exactly who the hookers are or who the johns are, but I am pretty sure I know who is getting screwed.
