Title: Oil Cooler
Post by savage_skulls_ on 05/27/15 at 00:52:27

Been thinking about putting an oil cooler on the bike just to have a bit of added insurance with the warmer weather coming up and doing a lot of stop and go riding in town. Google searches haven't turned up anything bike specific. Then again they don't for much of anything on our bikes. Anyone have an oil cooler on theirs? If so what have ya got, where can I get it, and how simple is the install? Thanks in advance.

Instead of Google Search.....you can use the search button at the top of this forum page......you have to set the search parameter for the length of time you want to search, and it which thread.  An "all posts" search in the Rubber Side Down got me this.

Fun project, challenging, but where you live I could see that money spent on tires and gas.

here's typical running oil temp in Cali

if you're worried about it, I'd put one of these on the front oil pressure check port...

and not worry about it till it hits 300°

Oil Cooler.
My thoughts. For a while, I was, obsessed, with knowing the, ‘exact’ temp on the oil on the little XT-225.
(Which holds about 3 table spoons of Oil)   :(
Na, it is a lot more, just seems like 3 tablespoons !

Anyway, Oil Cooler ideas looked at them, their was even one being made in Japan.
Then planned designs, to, McGiver, one.
But first. bought the ’Trail Teck’,
did the Oil sensor, ‘ring’ under the plug,
It was showing 400 - 450 degrees !

I have always gone by the credo,
that, ANY, ICE motor oil, over 300 degrees, for 15 min,
it becomes, TOAST.

So now, I am really worried.

So went to the local Junk Yard.
 (‘er, Used, Automobile Recycling Center)
Unscrewed, a, ‘oil immersion’, sensor from a old engine block that was on a pile for smashing.
Went to a local, auto parts store, got a gauge, with a clip on the end,
(to match the one on the sender)
Stuck that ’sensor’, in a pan of water, set it on a outdoor gas burner ring,
(Use that to fry my fish  in),
and when the water boiled, the gauge read, 218.  (Close enough).
Bought another oil drain cap, drilled & tapped it, put the sensor in.
Put the gauge, on the HB’s.

And, Voloa.   Temp, on hot days, in slow traffic, went up to 275.
(One time I got it up to 280)
Standard was 240 - 260.

So as, W.S., said: “Much to do about nothing”.

Long winded version of; ‘Don’t worry about it”

However, After taking a LS650 completely apart, have some ideas,
‘ . lets see, put this here, loop over their, do this, than that . ‘

But will only do that, when I find, my, ‘roundtuit’.

I reckon I won't sweat it then. Just got a Lil worried reading so many threads regarding head gaskets and blown motors and others warning about a lot of stop and go city driving. Thank you all for putting my mind at ease and ending my hunt for the needle in the haystack
