Title: starter clutch upgrade
Post by irishjake on 05/25/15 at 13:39:21

Hi this is my first time posting on any forum so please excuse any mistakes.  Basically I recently bought a 91 stock Savage, I decided to check the  starter assembly only to find one tooth missing from the main starter gear.  I have ordered a second hand starter clutch upgrade as per info on this site.
My questions are:
                        1. Will a 2007 stator cover fit my 91
2.Will my stator fit the newer cover
3.Will I need to use washers with the new case
4.Should I replace the damaged starter gear
5.If I decide to rework the original case do I need to
bring it to a engineering shop, if not how/ tools etc
                        6.What size are the washers

As these parts are hard to get here my poor Aunty who is a nun in Florida, has agreed to bring parts over for me when she comes on her annual visit home next month, so its important I get the right parts.
Thanks regards Jake.

Thanks for the quick reply. I probably should have said that I have scoured the Internet including the link you supplied without finding the answers to the questions I posted. I did ask Verslagen about the compatability of the newer cases but couldn't give me a definite answer. If you could take a look at my questions again that would be great. Thanks ;)

That info is around here somewhere...

Wait a little,.. and someone will show up with experience...
I haven't done one myself...

Weekends here are slow, and this is Memorial Day holiday in the US...

1.I'll have check my records, but the latest I know I used is a 2002.
2.I don't think there's any changes to the stator that would interfere.
3/6.yes, don't know right off hand, thin.
4.I would if I didn't want to ever open her up again.
5.I would recommend it, but yes it could be done with enough ingenuity.
One of my managers was from england, brought up in the old fashion of apprenticeship.  Told me how he had to go down in a mine and replace a woodruff key with only a file to make a new keyway.  so yes it can be done, if I need to tell you how, then I wouldn't recommend it.

P.S. in the cafe, there's a members map with listings all over the world.

Thanks Verslagen, sorry to sound pedantic but is the 2002 case the same as a 2007? I will order one today if it is, just can't afford to make a mistake. Thanks again ;)

Have been looking at second hand covers, not all vendors know the age of their covers and its hard to tell from the pictures. I was told by one that an 07 would not fit a 97 bike but im not sure that is true as the part number doesn't seem to have changed since 96. I did notice on the 07 cover that their was a letter B embossed inside the cover which seems absent on any of the older cases I have seen. Im still trying to decide whether I should try and rework my old case.  From what Ive read it looks like a drill small hacksaw and a small file will do the job if done carefully or am I being naive?
Im still trying to decide whether its worth buying a puller and starter clutch  when the only damage seems to be one broken tooth on the main starter gear.

Ordered 07 generator cover hopefully it will fit, will let you know.  Was wondering if anyone has any experience with Chinese starter clutch's? Have seen them advertised on eBay, much cheaper than oem but I'm a bit dubious.

I'd be leery of Chinese made starter clutches with really low costs

and unless it's a common part used in several models, likely it's not for the savage.

and verify commonality using oem fiche.
