Putting the Ryca exhaust together but the connector is a bit loose. Wondering what sealant you guys have had success with. Permatex muffler and tail pipe sealer? Hi temp red RTV sealer? ultra copper RTV? Others? Thanks!

Jeff,

Permatex muffler and tail pipe sealer will work if the pieces fit together properly.

Harley Davidson Exhaust Clamps are the very best made and they are not expensive, $7.00 or $8.00. If you cut hacksaw kerfs in the outer piece of pipe, add some Permatex Sealer, and tighten down a Harley Clamp (Part #65296-95A) you should never have a leak.

Try to cut the kerfs so the the clamp will cover them completely.

I am going to assume that you know how to test for leaks using a candle?

Thanks! I got a tube and I'll see what happens. What is your candle trick? The same as finding a draft in your house?

Jeff,

Use a candle long enough so you are not bumping the hot exhaust with your hands. I usually cut a standard dinner table candle in half for the testing.

You hold the flame near the joints in the exhaust system and if there is any leakage you will see the flame fluttering.

I cannot stress enough how good the Harley Exhaust Clamps work to minimize the chance of leaking. You can never get a carburetor tuned correctly until the exhaust system is leak free.
