Title: My tinker toy
Post by LANCER on 05/14/15 at 14:41:35

Got a few new things for it:
-high compression pistons
-new Perky camshaft
-rejet of carb
-new exhaust

Yep, it runs a WEEE bit better.   8-)

Next is a decent air filter;  any suggestions ?

Is there a belt on it or does the exhaust just blow it down the road?
Looks good, try to stay inside the envelope. That looks like a whole world of difference between that and the Savage.

Needed something a bit bigger and heavier for my bride and I, so exchanged the mainly solo seat for the 2-up seat, added the back rest, and beefed up efficient low-midrange power for the 2 of us.
The new exhaust is a bit lower and much less harsh than before, which makes it much more pleasant.

Did I mention it is a WEEE bit faster ?   ;D ;D ;D

It is a GOOD thing that the igniton does have a "cut-out" at the redline

I don't remember if you were here when I got it.
I picked this machine up in Jan '11 at a Chevy dealer with shopping with my daughter for a new car for her.  It had set in their showroom for months & marked down & down & down.  The REALLY wanted to sell it.  I offered $4k out the door if they could come back with a contract in 15 min.  He was back in 5.  After taxes etc I got it for $3500.  I crashed in Feb and the insurance totaled it for $4600 and I bought it back so ended up with $3500.  I spent about $1000 putting it back on the road.

That's a sweet deal
no offense to my S40, but sometimes I wish it was a Harley (usually when I'm forced to rise the freeway)

That's been Totaled? You stole it, had it crashed out from under you, fixed it, your money in is zilch,  and you have a really nice looking bike. Good for you, man.
What was the damage? Tell about the repair, or point me to iif you did.

Yep, crashed pretty hard on that thing I did, but it hurt me a good bit more than the bike.  The tank still has the battle scars on the far side.  I think I may have a photo of it.
The damage was:  the bars were crunched hard on the left side and smashed into the tank, so those were replaced.  The clutch lever was broken, damage to the light/horn/signal controls with damaged wires to them; left side foot controls for shifter and peg was broken up/bent; left side signals front & rear broken; rear tail/stop light broken; bent tag bracket; and maybe a couple of other things I've forgotten.
I kept the tank as is, as a reminder for me, and the rest was mostly just take off & replace.  I did repair the tag bracket and the push button controls on the left side.  Mostly just a grind/polish/paint thing and repair/replace some wiring that had been torn apart.   A friend of mine, John, who owns a small independent HD shop in Chapin helped out with many of the parts needed at cost or just gave them to me.  He is, or was, on Hwy 6 just south of Chapin SC.  If you are ever in the area and need help he is a good man to call.

I love the color the new headers have taken on after riding a bit.  It's all brushed stainless from tip to tip.

I would guess it is "When I am forced to ride the Freeway....".

The "s" and "d" are right next to each other on the keypad....easy mistake!

Obvious ?  Well, maybe for someone with normal brain activity but there are those of us who have a bit of kink in our thought processes.  We are not always in the middle of the road on some things and at various times.   ;D ;D

I'm looking for some weight loss on my Sportster...

I'm curious how many other Forum members have both a Savage and a Sportster as stablemates.

My Savage (S40) was the bike on which I learned to ride 3 years ago.
After 2 years I gained enough confidence and skill to get a heavier bike that provided
more stability at highway speeds. I'm a recreational rider and my riding is equally split
between city, twisty country, and short freeway trips. I didn't want a large cruiser, but
I was open to most any brand or model within my budget.

My decision was made easy by a local seller with a low mileage 2007 Sportster 1200
(same year as my S40) that he needed to sell quickly and he offered it to me at a very
attractive price. A trip to the local Harley dealer confirmed that it was in good health
so I became a proud owner of a Hog. (Is a Sportster a Hog?)
The Savage and the Sportster now share the same stable and they seem to get along well.

I've ridden about 700 miles on the Sportster and find that I enjoy it. However, I don't have
an overall preference for one over the other. They each provide a unique riding experience
and I'm equally happy to hop on either the Savage or the Sportster depending on where I'm
going to ride, or just my mood at the time. I realize that I'm fortunate to be able to keep both
scoots for my pleasure, but I'm sure there must be other Savage & Sporty owners with their own
experiences to share.

The S40/Sportster pairs I know about belong to:

Serowbot, Lancer, MMRanch.....and you.

The pipes are already gone; part of a trade during the work done here.
However, the air cleaner will be for sale, and possibly the carb as well, when I decide what I am going to do.  I have spare VM & Edelbrock carbs to play with and may go with one of those or buy a new Mikuni VM or TM.  When I know the carb I am going to use that will help determine what kind of filter I might want.

HOG stands for "Harley Owners Group", so yes your sportster is a HOG....or you are... which ever you would like it to pertain to.

Surprising enough there are a few savage fella's that also own sportsters, and other bikes, as we don't all ride our S40/LS650's all the time.
Each bike suits a purpose, or attraction :)

Thanks for that bit of information, old_rider. I wondered how the term "HOG" actually
became synonomous with the Harley brand. I had always assumed that it was a reference to
the hefty size, sluggish handling, and bad behavior of the stereotype earlier models.
Since my lovely wife positively assures me that I'm not hefty, I'm not a slug, and I don't
behave badly, then the name "HOG" couldn't possibly pertain to me even though I now own one.
I think I'll keep both my HOG and my wife.   :)

The term Hog for a Harley predates the Harley Owners Group by decades, and I'm pretty sure the Harley Owners group was named that deliberately to capitalize on that (Harley is very good at capitalizing on their name and it's characterizations
Hog is a term applied by Bikers to the big twins made by the Motor Company, and is almost never applied to the Sporty
Back in the 60s it was usually only applied to the Dressers

Art Web:

The thread you linked to was humorous (and informative).
Especially the first post:

"Beginning in 1920 a team of farm boys down South that would become known as the "hog boys" consistently won races. The group had a hog, or pig as their mascot. Following a win, they would put the pig (a real one) on the back of their Harley and take a victory lap."

But I don't think I'll share that with my wife.  ;D
