Title: Vibration
Post by savage_skulls_ on 05/03/15 at 10:51:27

Has anyone else experienced a lot of vibration when you hit 60+ mph and is there anything I can do to counteract it. I'm planning a 400+ mile trip. Mostly highway and don't want to be so worn out I can't even enjoy the ride. Thanks!

Yes, all of us. These bikes vibrate a lot. I don't know your basis of comparison. Can you describe the vibration? Is it speed or rpm related? If it's speed related perhaps some thing is out of balance or loose.

Usually it's loose motor mounts
if you feel it in the feet, it's the lower ones
if you feel it in the hands, it's the upper one under the tank.

My Savage vibrates a lot less than my 883, or a V-Star...
It's actually incredibly smooth for a big single...

Yeah it's in the hands. I'll take a look at the mounts. I think it may be rpm related. I noticed it vibrating a little when I was riding at 35 mph in 2nd gear to try and keep the battery charged on a short trip. I think I may have a short in my wiring somewhere, however, because it's almost like my battery is dying more overnight rather than stop and go trips(although, it does kill it in that scenario too lol). That's a topic for another thread though. But yeah, almost positive it's got more to do with rpms than speed and definitely in the hands. So... upper motor mounts near the tank?

Yup I would start a thread on that.... and post all your modifications or non-OEM stuff while you are at it. It will help with the trouble shooting, everyone will have to do in their heads :)

Your hands Will take a beating if you aren't wearing gloves and grip too tight.

I have seen far worse bikes than the S40 for vibration.  I had a Norton/Matchless P11 that required constant checking of all the bolts due to vibration.

My Yamaha XT 500 was about the same as the S40.  Perhaps see if you can ride someone else's Savage to compare with.

Vibes really pick up at 60 on mine, too.  Makes my inline 4-banger feel like holding a soft kitten in comparison.

A 140/90-15 rear tire will help the speedo read accurately plus it has the added benefit of dropping the RPMs ~200 or so which will help to smooth out the vibes at 60-65.

Mine has a rough spot around 60 or so but smoothes out again as it approaches 70 mph.
