So finished the carb rebuild pulled the tank to replace crank case hose with a longer one, and noticed I have a leak in my tank....

its maybe a drip every hour on one of the pinch weld seams, a failed attempt at JB weld ( i didnt drain the tank and let the gas seep itself threw the jb weld as it was curing )

picked up a can of Red Kote to try to fix it from the inside.... Anyone have any success with the stuff? And anyone know how corrosive it is to powder coating? The can sugests paint job after you seal the inside.

Red Kote is not a corrosive material. Its a very "red" liquid, as thick as maple syrup. Its not a multistep product like Kreem.

I have used it, and I use it on EVERY tank that I have (leaker or not).

I drain the tank, rinse with water, rinse with alcohol....let it air dry.

I pour in a 1/2 can (comes in quarts), and roll it around upside down....everywhere. I usually have a duct tape gas cap with cardboard. Make sure you have your reg. cap and petcock removed.

Then sit it upright and let the excess slough off the sided and out the bottom petcock holes. You'd be amazed, you get almost ALL the material back out for the next use!!!!!!! it really puts on a very thin coat.

I've never had a leaker. Acetone will dissolve it....it will also dissolve your paint!!!! so careful.

The only down side is your fuel gets a pink tint for the next year.

I love the stuff. cheeeep too. designed for small leaks in diesel truck tanks......

Surprisingly.....JB Weld is not gasoline proof, and neither is the silicone RTV gasket products. Both of these will eventually be softened by the gasoline.....and none of them have any chance of fixing a leak while the tank is still oozing fuel out the leak.

I once tested the RTV by drilling a small 1/16" hole in the side of a plastic soda bottle, and then placed a layer of the RTV gasket material over the hole and let it cure overnight. The next day I put some gasoline in the bottle, and very soon the hole was dribbling fuel.

Red Coat works. We use it to do final sealing on rivited aircraft fuel tanks. Swing's directions are dead-on.

This is what the directions state:

completely.
