Title: S40 Key Blanks
Post by KennyG on 04/09/15 at 20:42:27

I stopped at the locksmith today to get a spare key made for my 2013 Suzuki S40 and he didn't have a key blank long enough to make a key for me.

I am thinking Ron Ayers, or would appreciate ideas where to get the proper blank?

This is the place I got my blanks from. They worked. Carefully study your key to get the right version!!

I had a spare key made for my '06 last summer. The blank the locksmith used was an ilco X118. It was listed in his catalog as the blank for some model Yamaha, but this guy, who obviously knew his stuff, took the time to match up my key to the diagrams in the ilco book till he found a blank that matched. The key he made works perfectly.

My local locksmith did not have the keys.

I went on eBay and found the blanks at a good price - but be sure to match up the photographs provided as there are several different shapes of keys used on the Savage.

Old N Slow

I telephoned the locksmith in Denton and gave the smith the Ilco X118 number which they have in stock.

I will ride the bike into their shop next week and they will cut the key and test it for fit.

Thank you for the input.

Let us know if it works. I can't imagine that Suzuki would have changed the ignition switch guts between '06 and '13, since they haven't changed anything else, but you never know ::)

Old N Slow,

After the key is cut, and if it fits I plan to post the results here and there is another place listing fastener sizes I thought I would post it there also.

The key you are going to get is "one" possible key....there are several different keys used on the bikes - one size doesn't fit all.

If you want to add it someplace...place it here for now:  http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1150464511/0

It does not belong in the Off Beat Measurements and Sizes.

We need to get the key/ignition switch, gas cap, tool box lock issues combined into a usable thread in the Tech Section.

I have a really good locksmith here, and they had the Yamaha blanks as well that fit my bike just fine.

I did, however, have to order the fork lock blank (don't have my keys here to say what flavor) that some claim is a forklift key blank, but the same locksmith cut it as well and it works perfect.

Hope your luck with your locksmith is as easy.

Ilco does make the exact correct blank for the Suzuki Savage: X179 SUZ12  http://www.mrlock.com/eshop/locks/SUZ12.html

Thank you very much.

I will call the locksmith Monday and see if they show the key blanks in their catalog.

When I was searching for a key blank last year, I found that some savages had a "mirror image" key compared to mine.  So keep that in mind.

I ended up using a yamaha yh50 blank, but it didn't work until i did some extra cutting by hand with a file - a little too"thick".  I was able to make it work, but there's probably a beter match

The first few times you attempt to use the fork lock....it is a bit confusing and it takes a few times to get the method figured out.

Today, the Master Locksmith at Laura's Lock & Security in Denton TX cut a new key for my 2013 S40.

The locksmith used an Ilco X117 key blank and it fits perfectly. I tested the gas cap, and the tool box locks and the new key works flawlessly.
