Title: Straight or pullback risers ?
Post by Manchesteral on 04/04/15 at 10:28:20

Okay, now that we've established that I'm a rookie rider we can continue with the multitude of questions  ;D

I'm trying to make this bike look as mean as possible so I'm making some extensive changes, I currently have a Straight bar on the top of the front fork and I'm planning to put some risers on it, I'd appreciate other mebers input on this, I personally would like to raise the bars about six centimetres, around 2˝ inche,s am I doing straight up risers or pullbacks your concensus will be my guide  :-/

Mean looking? I dunno what you might want, but comfort and ease of handling are more important to me than what shivers my bike may or may not send up and down someone else's spine. I can't even really appreciate what it looks like while I'm riding.

Looks or styling is very important to me but comfort is a major factor. You should be able to reach your bars with elbows bent slightly. I would sit on the bike and see what is comfortable for your reach. Usually people will put pull back risers on with drag bars but its all personal preference. I dont think pull backs make it look any less mean. >:(

Nothing screams "mean" like sky high apehangers, or 6" dogbones. Both of which have been used at varying times on one or the other of my Savages. The daily rider uses 2 inch or so dogbones in the stock base units, with a low and wide FL touring handlebar. F*** mean, that one was built to replicate a 50s vibe... lifted seat, wide bar, functional crash bar, floorboards, small windscreen, full rear fender, nicer taillight and rear signals... The Savage/S40, stone stock, is a cartoon, a nice cartoon, but still a 1973 saki induced knock off of a vintage English racing single, with bad brakes and a horrible electrical system.

Play on the bike's built in vintage vibe. Emphasize the engine. Swap to a real (side mount 7 inch diameter lens) headlight. Deep six the bloated rear section that looks like a Harley Super Glide bred a Honda Z50 "monkey bike" and had a love child.

You want it "mean"... Dirt tracker (look up Matchless G50 or similar). Street tracker (study the late great Norton Manx). Rigid chopper/bobber (Voodoo Vintage or Ryca based is easiest).

Heck, just look at some of the rolling abortions I've built out of my 98 over the last few years... I managed to literally melt most of the electrical system. Looked alright, ran like crap, handled great and always drew a crowd.  ;D

I flat wore this bike out. Most "popular" build scheme it ever had...http://i1277.photobucket.com/albums/y490/mphsgal/LISA-HP/Photos/Savage/chikstik1web_zpsfa7142e7.jpg... it gave up a bunch of parts to build "Sam",  my daily rider...

If you are unfamiliar with dogbone risers... http://i1277.photobucket.com/albums/y490/mphsgal/LISA-HP/Photos/Savage/fullrear_zpse5d3fcf2.jpg...they are the silver things holding the bar up. This bike no longer runs, but it is the best shot I had of the risers. 1" tube goes in the stock riser, add the dogbones, then add the bar. Nearly infinitely adjustable.

A set of period dogbones is going to run you around $30 American. Reproductions considerably less, but the modern knock offs are junk.

Versy's beast has some pretty mean looking bars.

I put some Aluminum spacers on mine, they are about 1" dia and 2" long. Just edited my old videos and made it into one. I did this back in May of 2014, worked well for me.
