Title: Headlight ears and aftermarket lights Post by swing69 on 04/01/15 at 11:25:30 I've seen plenty of crude looking aftermarket lights that mount by a single post off the bottom tree. The "nicer" onces in my opinion, use the 2 side mounts, requiring headlight ears. I measured the 2 fork tubes, they are roughly 7 1/2 c to c. So nice cast alloy ears (38mm tubes or universal types with shims) would hold the side mounted one nicely. I like the steel body lights, with glass. rather than ABS bodies with a plastic lens. But an issue with all of the lights I've seen has be an enormous hole for the wires to pass from, with no closing grommet provided! looks pretty crappy in addition to a rain catcher. To the point: anyone using such a set up??? Picts and links to parts if you have some! thanks |

Title: Re: Headlight ears and aftermarket lights Post by Dave on 04/01/15 at 11:50:26 One of the problems is that the Savage has a wide fork spacing for most headlight buckets - so unless you use a big headlight the mounts end up not being parallel and must angle inward...or you could used some spacers on the side of the headlight bucket. I bought some of the really nice cast aluminum mounts from Dime City and could not use them as the angle was too great. A few others have used the mounts that are made from flat pieces of steel or aluminum, and they had to cut and angle them to fit the light. It may be that the mounts could be put on the forks with the light bracket on the inside of the forks instead of the outside. I believe the best headlight you can get is a bucket that will accept a 7" light....then buy a Hella or Cibie headlights that are E code instead of DOT. The E code headlights have a better light pattern than the DOT lights. Dime City has some metal housings that will work wit the 7" headlight inserts. There was a thread about this somewhere....I need to go find it. Here it is...... http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1413314755/4#4 I did not like what I found available...so I made my own using the turn signal mounts, some aluminum bar, and a few bolts and JB Weld. In 3 years and 6,000 miles it is still working. http://i46.tinypic.com/308wa3q.jpg |
