Title: wont start
Post by JBK on 03/31/15 at 21:43:08

got a problem starting my 01.  been sitting since Sept.  gas was drained.  battery is new.  fresh gas now.  will not start.  just turns and turns.  carb been clean.  it is getting fuel from tank.  first tried yesterday with some carb cleaner while starting, would start up and go as long as i was all over the throttle. then would die after releasing.  today it wont even do that.  ran fine before sitting up.

More details, no one reads
All over
And knows exactly what you did with the gas.
Choke?
Battery Voltage?

even though it's new, you need to monitor it, if it drops below 10v, it won't start.

but it sounds like it needs it again.

sounds like the main is ok, your pilot is clogged.

If it is all stock, turn the fuel valve to run, they leak on prime. If that stops the fuel overflow, plan to drain the tank and replace the fuel valve with a real Yamaha 660 Raptor mechanical version. Also plan on an oil and filter change...

Where in Mississippi are you? I'm 30 minutes north of Memphis and off today (Wednesday). If you are fairly close by, I may be able to take a look at it for you. Also have a place on the coast (first LS650 purchased 2/98 brand new in Biloxi). There are a few other MS forum users, one may be closer and could help you fix it.

Yea she is all stock.  Forgot it on prime last night, guessing that's why it puddled.  Carb was spotless.  Fuel is getting to carb obviously.  I live in Hattiesburg, north of coast.

They only leak I if the float valve is not closing or the float is set wrong

And when the carb floods gas CAN get into the cylinder and wash the oil out and run down into the oil.

So complete tear down of carb and check oil. Would that not let it start though?

Checked oil. Level is normal. No gas present.  So will do a compete tear down of carb. Clean it.  New fuel.  Clean tank.  New fuel hoses and filter. And new vaccum line.  See what that does.  I'm guessing it sitting on prime for 7 months with half a tank of gas wasn't for the best.

So finally got carb broke down and cleaned thoroughly.  This is was what left afterwards. Now on to the tank.

but you said the carb was clean   :-?

Looks like carb is clean might have been optimistic thinking.

Hope that got your problem fixed.  We're finally pretty mich in the beginning of riding season. Hate to see anybody's bike down when the weather is good.

Got everything as clean as one man can. Hooked carb back up, set it to prime, let the bowl fill with fuel and fired it up.  Took a sec but she fired up.  Only thing is when I pull on throttle it spit and sputtered.  Got real weak, and died.  Figured was batt, so I hooked up charger.  Fires right up.  Revs just fine.  Until I take off charger.  Then back to spitting.  Guessing batt is too weak? Was brand new as of September.

put it on the charger, hope it holds a charge.

Yea the only way it'll turn over now is with a spray of carb cleaner. Even then it only lasts a sec before dying.  Learning my lesson

you may not have it licked yet.
that seems to say you're still not getting gas.
yet your volts with a meter.
you need 10v for a spark.

After charging battery overnight, a little sweet talk, and rubbing in ways my wife would get jealous over, I got her running and running right.  She's a fickle beast at best.

Maybe I jumped the gun.  Haven't gotten to ride lately due to crappy MS weather.  Jumped on today and no juice.  Jumped off with car, cranks right up.  But when cables are off lights go dim and she spit and sputtered awful.  Now with cables it rev'd just fine. Np.  But on her own, just weak and acts like starving for fuel.  Can't pull throttle back a hair without it hesitating.  Bad battery or other?

Take the battery someplace that can properly load test it. Until you know for sure that the battery is, or isn't, any good you're not going to solve this. I don't know how cold it gets where you are, but if the battery went dead while the the bike was sitting, and the temperature got below freezing for a day or two, the water in the battery might have frozen.
If that happened it doesn't matter how new the battery is. It's junk.

Last summer Oldfellor, and I were down visiting MMRanch at his house, and we had another member coming to meet us and go to the Lynchburg rally.  The fellows bike ran fine to come meet us - but when he went to start the bike the battery was dead.  We put it in a charger for a while and the battery just wouldn't come up to voltage - so we jumped the bike and got is started and unhooked the jumper cables.  It was running OK......and after a couple of minutes I made the mistake of hitting his horn button (curiosity sometimes gets the best of me), and the bike began to spit and sputter and cough.  In a minute or two the bike started to idle OK again - but you could not add throttle for a bit longer.  After a few minutes we saddled up and rode to the show - then got another jump for him to get home.

The lesson I learned - is that a bad battery can cause the bike to spit and cough and sputter when the battery is in poor health...even though it can idle OK.  The spark plug and coil have to work harder when the throttle and/or rpm increase.....so your problem could very well be caused by a weak battery.

Will get it load tested today and update

Load tested batt.  Deader than dead. Lesson learned.
