Title: fuel line/hose
Post by hotprops on 03/16/15 at 15:28:19

got my raptor thingy today ronairs has a full stock up again. so i went to napa and bought new 1/4  inch id thick wall tubing .
i will make a dupe of the stock hose and will not use a inline filter .
the question is will 1/4 inch be large enough? thanks

5/16, 1/4 is very tight.

concerned with fuel flow primarily .

5/16" flows a lot more than 1/4".....use 5/16".

Do the math. 5/16" will flow a little more than 1.5x's what 1/4" will flow.

If you are using ethanol pump gas (E10), don't use Nylon.  My Sherco Trials motorcycle fuel tank was made of Nylon.  After 2 months of using E10, the tank had absorbed the ethanol and grew in size.....it was pushing the rear fender off the mount.  I took the tank off and set in outside for a few days to air out - and it shrunk back to the original size.  Evidently ethanol is a solvent for Nylon.

So.....use the Tygon.  The only concern I have with Tygon is that it is not very heat resistant - it works fine on the Savage but in applications where the fuel line is close to something hot.....it is not great.  Silicone works much better in areas that are hot.

Nylon absorbs water which causes it to grow, you probably had some water in your gas.

I don't know what to tell you about water in my gas......

I bought E10 pump gas from the station, and the bike required Premium so I would turn the pump on to the Premium setting, pump a few gallons into my car to clear out the Regular fuel, then fill the jug with the Premium.  I stored it in a 2.5 gallon plastic jug that I kept in my insulated garage.....I couldn't have been more careful about storing my fuel.  I had two trials bikes, a 2004 that I bought used and had to replace the tank as the tank was soft and gooey when I bought it, and my 2009 that the dealer claimed would be fine on pump gas - it only took 2 months for the tank to swell up.  If it is water related.....maybe it is the 90% humidity we have in this area in the summer.  Once I switched to ethanol free fuel - I didn't have any more problems in 4 years.  Could Nylon absorb both water and/or ethanol?

If I had problems with water in my fuel.....the same would apply to anyone riding on the street and using pump gas in their bike and using a nylon fuel line.

Larger is better.  (Oh, heard that before?)

A Larger ID Fuel line is Better than a smaller one.
Just as, (if in doubt), a larger gauge wire is better than smaller.

And pump gas. The 10% ethanol stuff.
Or as some say, (Crap Gas)   ;D ;D ;D

Ethanol, at it’s best is. 190 proof.
So if gas is 10% ethanol, then their is, .5% Water, in that gas.

In the real world, Most 10% gas, (regardless  of Octane)
Is 1%  (+/-)  Water.

Choose a substance, that does Not absorb, or react with water.
Oh, and you would be better served with a gas hose/filter, larger than 1/4”.  (Have tried it) It will work, but, Larger is Much better.

If you live near an airport use 100LL gas when possible in you bike.  It takes years to go stale and of course is 100 octane with a lean mixture setting, 130 when rich.

i have only used 100ll in  all my bikes for 40 years i live in a airpark with a 10000 gal fuel farm  :D

While I do use 100LL for the winter storage....it is a bit of overkill for a bike that runs just fine on regular, and when out on the road it is not possible.

How d I got about starting a "fuel farm"....I might want to grow my own! ::)

100LL is not the perfect fuel ,and in fact  it is not 100 octain its close to 95 if it was rated using the mogas formula. it also burns slower and will make the bike run leaner i always add about 20 % boat gas .
also LL or Low Lead is a misnomer it is actually very high in lead content used as a way increase octain and cushion some old stile valves.
the downside is it will cause lead fouling so a ounce or so of alcor TCP per tank helps scavenge the lead . than you have the perfect witches brew.
always carry a spare plug as it will always foul at the wrong time.
due to the plug location  and a lean running bike i am thinking it might not be the perfect fuel for the savage .
i have had a few thumper bikes BSA 441 and a Triumph but my old legs could not work the kick starter anymore . these bikes loved 100LL but had easy acess to the plug .i love the starter pushbutton  :)

My rebel loved 100ll, ran better, got more MPG, etc
My S40, not so much

You guys are throwing me off. 100 octane?  In a bike with 8.5:1 compression?  A little overkill I think.

i never bought it for octane, I bought it for the lack of ethanol
