Title: Idle very rich Post by mongo on 03/12/15 at 16:39:20 Problem: running very rich at idle acts almost like fuel is not going thought the pilot circuit, but rather pulling from the main circuit. the throttle stop is turned all the way up, still barely idles, fuel adj screw has not affect on the situation. Carb has been soaked in cleaner, all passages blown out with air, Main, Pilot jets both "seem" clear. White space looks like it was sanded down to about 2/3 size. Could the spacer be causing fuel to be pulled from the main, if its not sitting far enough down in the jet? I'm at a loss. Thx :) |

What about the pilot, seems fat to me..i was thinking about ordering from dealer a 47.5 pilot & the one you mentioned.. is there a better place to get these? btw the front break assembly i got from you back in dec is working great... |

Too high of fuel level, bad seals in the enrichment valve, TEV valve not working properly, needle and seat not sealing properly, etc. A #50 pilot is the "go to" jet in my opinion, and with a stock air cleaner the best point to start for a jetting upgrade is a #50 pilot, #150 main, and 3 washers in place of the white needle spacer (#4 machine screw washers). |

The float, floats in a bowl of water, no bubbles when fully submerged, so I think I can rule that out. The needle & seat look fine the rubber is no worn, but I wonder about the 0-Ring. Do you know if there are alternative 0-rings that can be used instead, just for testing? The PO lost the O-ring, spring & the washer that is behind the fuel mix screw, these are on order from the dealer. I didn’t know if this could cause these symptoms or not. This weekend just for giggles & grins, I’m going to adjust the float level lower, just to see if this changes anything. The TEV & enrichment valve, are these the same thing? Forgive a silly question, my experience is with automotive carbs, so the terminology is different on these. I’m still going to pick up the dyna muffles, can’t pass them up for $25, but ill hold off installing until I get the thing running normal in stock form. |

Title: Re: Idle very rich Post by Dave on 03/13/15 at 04:01:14 If your carb has the drain screw on the bottom of the float bowl, you can put a piece of clear tubing over the nipple on the drain, and then loosen the screw and hold the tube up against the side of the carb body. The fuel level should be just below the gasket between the float bowl and carb body. (Don't ride the bike this way....if the tube comes loose it would be a big problem). The enrichment valve is the black knob on the left side of the carb, and when open it allows more fuel to flow into the idle circuit. The TEV (throttle enrichment valve) is on the right side of the carb and opens to allow more fuel to flow when the carb is under a high vacuum....when you close the throttle and are compression breaking. Another thing you might check, is to be sure the slide needle is assembled correctly, and that the clips, washers and springs are in the right locations. We had one member who had the spring in the wrong spot, and it was allowing fuel to flow out the jet needle at idle. |

I think set the float lower by eye for now, just to lower the fuel level a little to see if it makes any changes Both the EV & TEV, appeared to be in good shape, & very clean when I disassembled the carb. The slide needle is assembled in this order from bottom to the top, right? Like the picture ? Spring, washer, spacer, plate (dimple down) & (2) vent holes open so that light can be seen through it. BTW this is not mine, just a pic I found, so if I plagiarized anyone I apologize in advance.... The float rattles when shaken more a metallic sound rather than liquid. |
