Title: The Driver Backrest!
Post by Suzukisavvy on 03/11/15 at 07:39:53

I want to put a driver backrest on my 98 savage to make it alittle more comfy. ANY ideas of how to do that? My thought was to take the passenger backrest and two steel plates and bold them to the 2 bolts on the chrome bar under the driver seat. Will that work? Any ideas accepted! thanks!!  ;D 8-)

Easiest way, is to bungee a tote pack to the pillion...
Added storage as a bonus...

Rowboat has a point. I had a gym bag tied down. Support for the lower back.. plus room for stuff,

Gym bag......Pfffft!

There are better options for a nice cushy back rest!

there's a company that makes one (protac IIRC) that makes one, but it's not cheap, Id go with the tail bag on the pillion

A small cooler with a flip down handle works great. Flip the handle down over the passenger back rest, tie it in with two bungee cords and you're ready to go. You can pack lunch, a little wine, a little cheese, whatever you want in it. Been using one for a back rest for years.

This works wonderfully.  It fit's like it was specifically designed for this and it it comfortable.  The dimensions are about 13x10x6 and it is waterproof as well.

I built this platform with optional backrest. I purchased an early model split seat off ebay for $25. I have a few more build pictures if you are interested.  You could probably use you existing sissy and integrate it into a luggage rack!

Depends on how skilled you are if you want to "back yard bill" or buy one.
The trip I made to the dragon I used a piece of baggage designed to wrap around the passenger seat and sit on your "luggage rack".
I just simply turned it over the passenger seat :

Or you can get nutz and do something like this:

what about building one that has some folding locking mechanism that would function as a backrest or pillion pad.

I have been discussing that.... make it like a folding lawn chair, with a ratchet lock type setup. :)

yeah me too but ended up going with just a solo seat but it would be cool to make the pillion pad/backrest and mechanism all one piece then have it bolt under the solo seat or add some width extenders with it to bolt up with the stock seat also. A feller could corner that market and make a pretty penny. :D

Okay thanks guys! I'm going to have 2 aluminum brackets that that bolt to the chrome bars and them take the sissy bar and from the passanger seat and bokt it the the brackets. If this doesnt work then get rid of the brackets no damage done! grinding them out yesterday wont finish them till monday. Will send a picture for everyone to see. Thanks guys!!! Youre the best! 8-) ;D

I found one on ebay for 100.00. Not sure if there are any more. It bolts right onto the sissy bar bracket and looks great! I would post pics if I knew how.lol

wish my bike had a sissy, I like those backrest bags better than regular saddlebags for actual usable luggage
Old rider what size bags are those you got? didja hafta relocate the blinkers? I like that setup
My cortechs are the 'sport' bags

Sorry Art, I don't remember the size that was on the tag.... the dealership was closing and I got them off the clearance rack for $75.
They are the expandable ones.
No I did not have to move the rear blinkers while using them, but ended up moving the blinkers for other reasons.

Sounds like you got a good deal
Mine are expandable, too, yours just look bigger fore to aft, so I was curious
I have yet to find a GOOD way to mount the set to the S40
