Title: How can you know what year an engine is?
Post by FLDoug on 03/09/15 at 19:39:52

I recently bought an engine, but I am not certain what year it is. The number stamped on the case is: P401-114544  Can that number be used to determine the year?

Thank you verslagen, I looked in Clymer and the tech center so I wouldn't ask something easily available and I still missed it.

From my understanding, it doesn't appear that the thread identifies how to tell exactly what year an engine is. It gives an extensive treatment of VIN numbers, but for engines there is a list of some years and the first 6 digits of the engine numbers. I am guessing that since a 1987 engine number is P401-113xxx and the engine number I bought is P401-114xxx, that my engine is either a late 1987 engine or a 1988.

Thanks again,  Doug

unless someone volunteers the missing years, can't say for sure what they are.

but your guess is as good as mine.
