Title: New guy, and y'all lied to me already!
Post by dontwannapickle on 03/09/15 at 01:51:12

So upon y'all's suggestion, I decided to raise the front of my seat, since several of ya said it only costs 5 bucks or so to do it.  And cuz my seat hurts my butt.

Y'all said that knowing full well a man can't go into Lowes and walk outa there with two screws and two rubber bottle stoppers and a few pieces of adhesive-backed felt.

So let this be a warning to you guys that haven't done this mod yet. When you go in there, you just might end up leaving with a socket wrench extension, a 3/8" to 1/4" adapter, a new set of drill bits, and a nice, straight-grained plank of red oak that's just begging to be whittled into a bow (even if you don't need another dang bow!)

And a receipt that shows you barely got outa there for $60! You've been warned.

;D

yeah Home Depot is the bane of my wallet.. well that and Ace Hardware, ,and the only thing I seem to buy at Ace is screws and bolts.. but I can run up one heck of a bill in screws.

Did you know they make just about any metric you want in HEX stainless? Only about $3 each... It takes 20 to replace all the ones on my windshield.
Oh and the Stainless Acorn nuts cost even more.

OK I dont wanna talk about it anymore......  :-[

Hay you got off easy !  ;D

I went to Ebay and bought a two piece Harley seat for $$$ , then went to LOWES .

ended up making some mounting brackets (bar-stock) , pop-riviting (fasteners)  them in cutting the pan (fine tooth saw) and tucking seat (sissors) material then stapling (back to fasteners).

But it sits GOOD  :D

Hay dontwantapickle ... I'm going right through Huntsville next month on the way to Texas  we going to go ride the Twisted Sisters, You want to go ?  (OK, it ain't the Dragon-thread)  :-?

I've learned to take the BIKE to lowes, if I don't actually NEED anything big, it cuts down on the amount of junk I can talk myself into buying  ;D

I got a 3foot piece of 3/8 stainless allthread for about 3 bucks.. but the guy likes me and gives me the price a high volume contractor gets.

Truth is, I already knew better. Fell into the trap anyway.

MM, I've been checking out those road trip plans and was thinking more along the lines of joining up with y'all in June. I like the mountains and I like to fling lead, too. 'Specially with frontstuffers and 'specially at critters.

I went to the Dragon a few years ago with a group that rides my other kind of bike (yamaha crotchrocket) but haven't been back since I found out they're not as aggressive about staying alive as I am. First ride of the weekend our lead rider lowsided under a 350Z about a mile before we even hit the CROT. Next four riders went around that curve so blindly they shot through the wreck scene so fast they couldn't stop for anther 50 yards or so. After performing about an hour of unsuccessful CPR come to find out that he was their third death in a half-dozen trips there! Talk about ruining a vacation. Learned that day that ya gotta choose yer riding partners carefully. Ya might have to taste their puke. Y'all don't get folks killed on yer rides, do ya?

Yeah, and this from the guy who fractured his back 2 years ago .....

We only get hurt lightly, but all the old timers are skint up (scarred) to some degree ('cept maybe Dave).

LOL, well technically I fractured it "before" I met you guys.....and I fractured it pickin' up the bike, only skinned my knee with the gravel trap.... LOL.... but if that is what it took to keep the dragon at bay... i'm ok with that.

I am prepping to bring the wife with me for the fall run.... and i'm planning on the texas run next month.

dontwannapickle you know you can only believe about half of what ya read on this site, But I'm telling ya for real nobody here drives crazy except the ones with handles that begin with "OLD"  ;)

Personally I don't like to drive faster than my Sighted-Stopping distance.   ::) most of the time ... :)

but:

Those same fellers will wait on us at the next intersection  ::) most of the time.

:)

Those front loaders are a lot of FUN !  I've got 3 of em myself .  ;)   There plenty of Iron targets spaced about but we got to watch-out for the cows , they are really pricey now days .

Simple rules
NEVER press a corner till you have been through it slowly.
Build Through the corner by making passes through.
If you haven't seen it in a while and aren't sure of road conditions, don't press.

JOG, your rules are nice for local riding.

In the mountains, the lead guy is seeing everything fresh & new for the very first time and since we don't repeat many roads, for the only time.

The ones behind him are scoping his entry lines and entry speed for info, but if he screws up they are riding along into it on false data.

Dave and Lancer and MM can either lead or follow as both can keep up with anybody.

Nobody could keep up with Big Zuk (not me, not Lancer, not MM)

Nobody could keep the White Goldwing from passing them on the Dragon (although we all tried).

I only lead intentionally when some Hurleys are following me close behind ....

Once upon a time, I could have done that..

I swore off the Dragon after that weekend.  Seems no matter how careful you are, some crazy can come around the curve at any time and take you out with 'em. Heck, in just one west-east pass through there I passed three wrecks and had a guy come across at me with his footboard throwing sparks! Came around a left-hander to see another guy going the opposite way in the ditch mangling his (sneakered) feet up between his Vulcan and the cliff on one side and the roadside on the other.

I do realize that the fact y'all are on Savages does indicate a very different mindset from that other group I rode with.

(few more posts and I kin PM!!) :)

Dontwantapickle
If ya put taller shocks on the rear then it not only raises the back but it also takes some of the RAKE out of the front effectually raising it too.   Then you don't drag so much and it might surprise ya how far you can lean over before anythings drags or tires slip.

The S-40/Savage 30-HP rating is enough to keep up with almost anything on roads like the Dragon.  I've got a brother who lives in that neighborhood and always has 100HP+ bikes , well he rides with us  most years and keeps up most of the time.  ;D

All that said :  I'm still not going around blind curves faster than I can stop in the distance I can see ahead.  8-)  It just ain't smart.  ::)  Heck we saw a bear in the road one year.  ;)

Always a good plan. Ride safe!

We don't go there to actually ride "The Dragon" itself.... heck, when I went we didn't even go there... well I didn't.. the guys went on the last day.
Most times the trips are trying to find new roads were the crazies are not riding and stopping at interesting finds and food joints.
I'm looking forward to the Texas run because it is new roads and putting a face to the names, and THAT is what the trips are really about. :)
If you go in June you can go early to MMR's place and shoot some bull.... well shoot and bull... I don't think the cow's are targets. ::)

now that ain't just shooting the bull !  ;D

heck the last one I sold was just short of $2,000.  ;)
