I think I've probably hit grasshoppers that big. At least they sounded that big bouncing off my helmet!  :o

I hate it when grasshoppers bounce off of your forehead. That hurts.

I had that photo of my screen saver at work for about a year.

It freaked people out....seems they like cut puppies, family photos, etc.

Ooops....seems like I forgot to type the all of the word "cute".

I could go back and fix it....but you shouldn't go back in time and mess around.  I have watched those "time travel movies", and I know all kinds of bad stuff could happen.

That happened to Tazio Nuvolari a very skilled racing driver in the 1930's. A deer leaped out on his Auto Union (Audi) while practicing at Nurburgring. At least Nuvolari had the benefit of four wheels and he had the deer's head mounted as a trophy.

On a city street, passing a park, I had one cross in front of me close enough I could hear the hooves on the pavement. Spooky, but nothing like actually having one bounce off.

I had a fawn, out in the country, do the same thing, I was braking it down as hard as I could, he was trying to get across the road for all he was worth. and like JOG, i cold hear the hooves clicking on the pavement. We both made it, for which I am very thankful.

My current score is Thumper 2, Bambi 0.

First time:
Small doe came from the left shoulder.  Didn't see her until JUST before she hit me leg and pounded it into the tank.  Bike jumped right, but controlled it OK.  Got stopped, turned around, and she was shaking her head in the middle of the road.. then took off.

Second time: Fawn came out of a ditch on the right shoulder.  Saw it, and had just enough time to think "Do NOT grab front brake.  Do NOT try to steer".  Smacked into it, knocked it over, ran it over.   Stopped.   It was laying in the road.  It was alive when I got to it, but dead by the time I carried it over to some shade.  That really bothered me for a while.     :(

Close calls.. .too many to count.

There's lots of deer where I ride. Thankfully, I've never had any problems with them. I've even pulled over to the side of the road and watched them for a while. It was a completely deserted road with the only traffic being me. Sometimes they're so close I can almost touch them. They like to stare back at me.  ;)

I've been lucky on the bike. I did hit a coyote with an airplane once. Messed up the landing gear and put me in the grass beside the runway. The brake line was the only thing that kept my right wheel from falling off.

That's one heck of a brake line.

So far....I have only hit small things.

Bird to the headlight, and a Bee to my throat...both last summer.

I did catch a dragonfly in the lip. I was heading toward him at 55mph, I don't know how fast he was heading to me. I know my lip hurt, I don't think he felt anything.

I guess I won that one.

That one must have had poor eyesight.  When riding I have always noticed that the Dragonflies can see me coming, and they take quick evasive action to avoid the collision.  Somewhere I remember reading that Dragonflies have the best vision of any insect, and can see about 200 feet.

One of the guys I work with hit a deer on his KTM this week. Killed the deer broke his arm and he got really banged up, the bike isn't totaled but needs quite a bit of work. He's a lucky sonna pregnant dog for sure.

Got hit by a Luna moth one summers eve on a long ride on the interstate. I thought it was a dang bird!
It got stuck under my right lens of my glasses and was flappin' away!
Man its rough pulling off on the shoulder when your right eye is closed and a buggy thing beatin' at yer temple!

Title: Re: ..and then it hit me,...
Post by justin_o_guy2 on 03/14/15 at 21:34:47

And the luna moth is used to sell Lunesta,,,

Summary: Luna moths are nocturnal insects that you may find flitting around a light outside.

This thread is a good argument for full face helmets with shields, now that it's gone to 'bug in the eye' stories  ;D

Title: Re: ..and then it hit me,...
Post by Kris01 on 03/15/15 at 19:35:54

I wear a FF helmet and have occasionally opened the shield just for the experience. That didn't last long. 45 mph bugs in the face hurt!

Okay, guys. Enough stories about bugs bouncing off. When you have to have one surgically removed get back to me.  ;D

I will never forget an old guy on a construction job when I was a teenager. We were all talking about the latest trip to the moon when he straightened up (As far as he could.) and said, "When they land a man on the sun, get back to me." And he went back to work. I think I'm that guy now.  ;D

And Preacher, I took a splatter last summer that looked like I ran through a Burger King condiment rack. I always carry a zip lock with folded paper towels soaked in vinegar. Took 'em all.

Obama just announced interest in a mission to the sun. He said that we would land at night.

Oh, Boof, you always make things so complicated! It was nice and juicy, just rubbed it on my britches leg and off we went. If the stuff gets dry, I just spit on it. For the really tough stuff I find a mommy to spit on it. Mommy spit will remove the rust from a bumper.  :D
