Title: new to the savage. few questions
Post by millartime10 on 03/01/15 at 16:37:00

hey guys, so i picked up an 87 savage last summer with plans on building up a cafe racer right away. well that changed quick after the first time i rode it around haha so i rode it all last summer to get the feel for it and stuff and now am ready to tear it apart.

i plan on doing the verslavy mod asap and a complete tear down, but i was wondering if anyone had ever used a different tank? something like an old honda or benelli tank? also I'm torn between ordering the ryca kit or parts from dime city cycles?
thanks guys!

strip it down, bob it out, do/make everything yourself, then ride the crap out of it. ryca is expensive as $$^#%$$

yeah I've priced it out a bunch of times and probably about 3500 for the kit I want. that's before paint and what not. I've found on eBay a Benelli style tank and seat pan for about 500 I was just curious as to how big of PITA it is to fit that on our frame ;)

Before I"Adjusted " its looks I'd get it running strong and reliable. I'd get the exhaust and carb and cam and everything that has to do with it going down the road sorted out..

It is good that you rode your bike for a while to get used to it, learn that you like the way it runs, and get any mechanical issues ironed out.

I used a GT550 tank on my Cafe' conversion and a few others folks have used that tank as well.  Braveteacher used a Benelli tank, and I believe there are a few other thank possibilities.  Here is a link to the "Bike Builds" section at the top of the Rubber Side Down page.  Look through there and you will most likely get some ideas.

Good luck man. I hope the build turns out great. If it goes as well as Dave's you'll have a sweet looking ride. I like Dave's big tank better than the Ryca BTW. And Braveteacher's is stunning. Have a look on Ebay, search "cafe racer tank" and see the cool shapes you can get for not much $$ from India. They probs need some fettling to make fit but that's part of the fun :).
