Title: Today's Youth
Post by MnSpring on 02/13/15 at 17:51:47

Today's Youth

TRUE Happing, Very sad, But also very funny:

Recently flying into Phoenix AZ, Took the shuttle to Prescott AZ.
Sat in the back, and a young girl sat next to me.
She was 23 years old, and a Sophomore at the Yavapai College in Prescott AZ.
In the 2 + hour drive, we talked about many things.

About 15-20 min left of the ride, she mentioned, a, ‘Female Professor’, gave her a, “Female, Bill of Rights".
Which she recited, (and was basically, from a 239 year old document, with of course, several Ultra-Liberal, changes).
I asked her: “Do you think that some of those things, came from the Constitution, and the original ‘Bill of Rights” ?

She said:   “The What”.
I said: “The Constitution of the United Stated of America, and the Bill of Rights”
She said, (again), “The What”.

(At that point, a lady sitting in front of us, about 40 +/-, turned around, and just, EXPLODED on her)

23 years old, a Sophomore in Collage, A Graduate of a High School somewhere in NY.   (She did not say where)

Does NOT, know !!!!!!

Exactly, WHO, is teaching these young people, and WHAT are they teaching?

They don't seem to care. We live in different countries , but there was a general election in New Zealand late last year. No guessing which age group had the lowest rate of enrolments, at least in the electorate I live in. Twenty four per cent of people couldn't be bothered to vote, given the quality of politicians, can you blame them? New Zealand was the first country in the world to give adult male voting rights in about 1858, could be wrong here, and definitely the first to give women the vote in 1893. Although I think Wyoming beat us for state or provincial elections. The late great sufferagettes in all countries would turn in their graves to hear this young woman. However I guess that's life.

Runwyrlph,

Europe is a continent.  There are several countries on the European continent.

http://europe.theworldatlas.net/countries.html

This map will show you the extents of Europe and the countries within.

Not a stupid question at all.  Stuff like this isn't, and hasn't been taught in a while.  Also, you made a statement, not ask a question.  Just picking a little.  ;D

To be honest,.. When I was young, I could care less about history or politics... Too busy having fun...
It wasn't 'till I got into my mid 20's that I started to find the workings of the world interesting...
Since then, I've been a fairly avid history buff...

So,... there's time...
There's worse things than enjoying your youth...

I won't ..... I was taught basic math in elementary school and as part of that training we were taught exactly HOW TO MAKE CHANGE and how to talk to the person while you did it.

Simple really, start with the $2.38 purchase price and put enough pennies into the guy's hand to make it to the next whole coin increment (2 cents gets you to $2.40) then get him up to the next quarter increment (a dime gets you to $2.50) then two quarters finishes the dollar.

You counted it out into his hand and talked to him while you did it -- making change was a professional skill that everyone had when I was a kid.

Of course it was assumed the person you were making change for was equally skilled and could easily keep up with the simple addition.

To this day my wife can just look at a grocery check out receipt and spot where her coupons were not correctly discounted -- and the clerks can't deal with that and have to call a manager who has to go get a calculator or else they void the item completely and ring it up again separately.

(I told one manager one time that they had charged me tax twice by doing that and it blew her mind ....)

yeah JOG. As a kid I remember clerks counted change back to people...

I was taught to always count the change back (with the tendered money on top of the drawer)  in my first pharmacy internship in a family owned drugstore.

I still count change back to people if I'm at the register - as much as anything just to enjoy their baffled expressions.

("why's the druggist counting backwards??')   :)

I always thought that was a silly commercial about the space pens.... because most ink is water based and will eventually disappear, where as a pencil is carbon and won't.
Also, ink will run out in pens faster than a pencil lead will run out, although a pencil will "shorten" and a pen won't.
There is a rather large "debate" on pen vrs. pencil.... i'm a pencil fan myself, because I can correct my mistakes, an erasable ink is very likely to disappear on its own after a few years on paper. :)
LOL and also, I carry a sharpener (knife) and a couple pencils in every vehicle... so in the event of an apocalypse, I can start a fire... well...if I can remember where I put that magnesium fire thing....

I'm 23 years old right now...I will be honest, there are a lot of little details I probably missed in High School my "ADD" doesn't help either when it came to paying attention in class.

But I do know what the Constitution is.
I do know what the bill of rights is.
I know george washington was our first president.
I know who won the Civil war.
I know who BIDEN is.
I know that we gained independence from Britain in 1776.

Title: Re: Today's Youth
Post by old_rider on 02/22/15 at 18:55:04

Sav..... I took a year of college drafting, scored high on all the tests.... was in the top 10 of a class of 50..... while in class we had to use higher math to solve equations, geometry, trigonometry and calculus.
After the class was finished, I decided to take my prerequisites to finish my first degree.
I was told by the counselor that assisted folks on their path to degrees, that I would have to take basic math classes and some algebra classes to get my degree.
I argued with several counselors and the college director about having to take the basic math classes after I had already had higher math during my drafting class. Why should I have to pay for classes that I did not need?
Because it was listed as a prereq..... is all they would say. Needless to say, I ended up dropping out of college and writing the Illinois board of education about it, to me it was the principle of the thing..... I had a "big" head...and couldn't be cured of it. LOL... I still do not have a degree.
Guess what...10 years later they had "testable" ways to circumvent having to spend more cash on un-needed classes.
I still have copies from our local newspaper that lists folks that made "The deans list" in the college... my mom cut out a dozen or so because she was proud of me, later when I dropped out she was sooooo mad.
Guess I told my story so you would know.... stay in school.... not because its cool.... LOL.... just so you will have a piece of paper that says you are smart.... and folks will hire you, "4years"  looks a lot better on a resume than "some college".

When ever I go to a Auction, and their is a old box/s of books their, and they go cheep, I buy them.
Read some, collect some, put some in the stove.

Anyway, have several, old, school books.
Mostly grade school, some high school.
and from reading them.

50 + years ago, a 8th grade education,
(for those who wanted to learn),
is BETTER, than, today's, advanced collage degree.

I doubt whether pencil will fade like modern inks can. And the ink fading really depends on the kind of ink used. Some fades in years, others will last for centuries, or longer if properly conserved. We have items in our special collection at work that are over 1000 years old in very good condition. The illuminations are beautiful and full of colour. Most of that age are written on vellum and the inks are mostly solids based not chemical. Rag paper lasts a long time, too.

Title: Re: Today's Youth
Post by Art Webb on 02/24/15 at 17:55:53

I'm not sure if fading was what I meant, though I may have said it that way, but don't penciled documents get blurry to the point of illegibility over time with handling more quickly than even modern inks? good point on how ink is made now vs 100s of years ago, it's definitely not the same animal
I'm just thinking if normal ink is so transient, why is everything done in ink now? not just legal documents, I understand that, you don;t want those erasable, but even school assignments must be done in ink
I thought the point was permanency
Am I off here?

Title: Re: Today's Youth
Post by gizzo on 02/24/15 at 18:05:03

Sure, pencil can be smudged if you handle it carelessly. So can ink. Some pencil more so than others, think hardness. You're right about the permanence thing, ink can't be erased like pencil can. I guess in school, so the student can't correct their work after the fact and dispute marks given? And on legal documents, it has to be black or blue ink: red won't show up properly on a photocopy. In this days, the ink will probably outlast the acidic, lignin rich junk paper it's printed on anyway.
