Title: carb needle jet issue Post by nof1 on 02/13/15 at 11:36:48 I'v picked up a savage for my girlfriend who has always wanted to ride. Happy valentines day baby! Thing is it needed a touch of work. Currently I have the carb off and stripped down but I can't get the needle jet out. So before I muck around with it and cause damage I thought I'd poll the experts. Bike in question is a 2001, carbs marked 24C4, 1 HOZ3. Here's a pic of the stripped carb w/ needle jet showing. You should be seeing threads in the bottom of the needle jet...where the main jet screws in. (Make sure it has a washer under the main jet as that is what holds the needle jet in place). |

I've not done much with carbs before but it just doesn't look/feel right. I've gone over the Clymers (thanks to the forum for a tip on that) and been over to the tech section to read up on "island style" cleaning and several other threads, that place is a treasure trove of info for sure. Unless other ideas come to light I'm probably gonna source a new needle and main jet, then tap out the current set up from above. |

Title: Re: carb needle jet issue Post by nof1 on 02/13/15 at 15:24:26 Alrighty, good to confirm it is indeed sheared off. Next step will be freeing it, as nothing is moving at all. I've sprayed it heavily w carb cleaner, and no change. Maybe next ill try some liquid wrench, I tend to really like that stuff, and it's handy. Please weigh in with any suggestions and ill update with progress. Guess I've got to find some pen oil ;D |

Maybe I can find a match for the threads and improvise an extractor... probably not tonight though. For now it's soaking in liquid wrench. Thanks for the help so far. |

Depending on location and mods,... you may want to go with a bigger size?... You will be looking for a "Large, round, Mikuni, main jet"... #145 is stock size,... tends to be a little lean for most bikes at sea level... Remember to install the washer under the main jet... it's important... |
