Title: carb needle jet issue
Post by nof1 on 02/13/15 at 11:36:48

I'v picked up a savage for my girlfriend who has always wanted to ride.  Happy valentines day baby!

Thing is it needed a touch of work.  Currently I have the carb off and stripped down but I can't get the needle jet out.  So before I muck around with it and cause damage I thought I'd poll the experts.  Bike in question is a 2001, carbs marked 24C4, 1 HOZ3.

Here's a pic of the stripped carb w/ needle jet showing. Thanks in advance

The main jet and washer holds it in place... once they are removed the needle jet comes out the top... after you remove the needle and slide...
This link might help you...

Is it just me....or does it look like the main jet is broken off in the needle jet?

You should be seeing threads in the bottom of the needle jet...where the main jet screws in.  (Make sure it has a washer under the main jet as that is what holds the needle jet in place).

Yeah it does and looks like glue keeping the needle jet in.

'bot, that pict is wrong, says to push where the float valve is.
Main jet is the tall 1, push from there.

Thanks folks, I have been thinking the main jet is broken, I'll dig it up and get a pic posted.  I've not done much with carbs before but it just doesn't look/feel right.

I've gone over the Clymers (thanks to the forum for a tip on that) and been over to the tech section to read up on "island style" cleaning and several other threads, that place is a treasure trove of info for sure.  Unless other ideas come to light I'm probably gonna source a new needle and main jet, then tap out the current set up from above.

To clarify the pic posted is the main jet & washer, which I think is sheared off, as Dave has noted.  So I guess I'm looking for suggestions on clearing it from the housing.

Yup the screw threads are twisted off...

The needle jet should still come out the top, I think...
Once you get it out,.. removing the broken threads will be easier...

PS... Versy,... that pic is from Savage Wahine's carb tutorial... Should we correct it?...

Like this?...

Hard to say what will penetrate whatever holding it in there.
You're gonna need some carb dip.
I'd rather try some pen oil 1st.
carb dip tends to be caustic and you may find nothing when you come back to it.
Although the yamalube stuff in good and won't damage the aluminum or rubber parts.

Alrighty, good to confirm it is indeed sheared off.  Next step will be freeing it, as nothing is moving at all.  I've sprayed it heavily w carb cleaner, and no change.  Maybe next ill try some liquid wrench, I tend to really like that stuff, and it's handy.  Please weigh in with any suggestions and ill update with progress. Guess I've got to find some pen oil   ;D

If I had it... that's what I'd use.   [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

pb blaster

atf and acetone

whatever you got.

Well 1/2 step forward.  I removed the sheared portion of the main jet, using a drill bit tapped into the opening.  Maybe I can find a match for the threads and improvise an extractor... probably not tonight though.  For now it's soaking in liquid wrench. Thanks for the help so far.

You do understand that it has to come out from the top,.. right?...
So, you don't need to pull it out,... you need to push it up...
;)...

Thanks for the clarification.  Prior posts did reference pushing it up, but the manual suggests it would fall out the bottom??.   perhaps I can push it out w an awl or something. I may reinsert the sheared threads and try that.

o.k. more progress, but now I really have to call it a night...always how it goes right?  Couldn't help but see if anything was ready to move, after all it been soaking for way over 2 minutes now! ADD jokes anyone?  Replaced the threads and tap tap tap.

Here's the end point for tonight.

Any suggestions for where to pick up a new main jet?

Yippie!...  now just give it a good soaking and get yerself a new main jet...

Depending on location and mods,... you may want to go with a bigger size?...
You will be looking for a "Large, round, Mikuni, main jet"...
#145 is stock size,... tends to be a little lean for most bikes at sea level...

Remember to install the washer under the main jet... it's important...
