Title: Won't start now
Post by wakosama on 02/08/15 at 11:57:03

Just got it, started fine yesterday when I picked it up.  No start just now.

Neutral Green light on, kickstand up, clutch pulled, nothing.  the lights do dim when I push the starter button.  I understand 'safeties' on guns.

1. assuming terminal on left side of bike is negative from battery pictures, but no visible markings of course

2. jump cables are for car and too big for the bike but they kinda attach a little to the bolt heads.  And they don't spark anywhere on the bike just when I flick them together before attaching...

NO I DON'T HAVE A TRICKLE CHARGER YET.
NO I DON'T KNOW HOW TO REWIRE OR SHORT THE SYSTEM.
NO I DON'T HAVE A METER.

so now what?  Less than a day, and I'm not happy already. >:(

Oh...before I posted I spent over an hour reviewing the troubleshooting guide and the tech section.  and found nothing useful.

kill switch?

mostly likely, your battery is run down.
a good trickle charger will fix that.
a cheap meter from HF is a good diagnostic tool.

thank you.  what kill switch?  what amp charger please? tks.

oh, it makes NO noise, no clicks, no grunts, nothing.  horn and turn signals work.

no idea how to check starter wires or connections. it didn't come with a book.

details... stock 2005, black, S40, one piece seat, 1865mi.  a Harley man got it for his wife who rode it a couple times each summer, so they're moving today and sold it qu :'(ick.  though I was lucky.  started and ran fine yesterday.

page 16 of the owners manual.

if you don't have one, download it from the tech section.

Switch..i.e.  Emergency shut-off, is by the throttle (big red switch)...
Lights dim?... battery is low...
Charger should be 1 or 2 amp max...

Never try to jump from a car with the car running... it's okay to jump otherwise...

2 fuses located under seat on right side...

Yer' still lucky,... this will fix easy... ;)...

Thank you very much.  Feeling senile.  Manual downloaded & Clymer from link.  Kill switch located and on.  "Battery tender" found at local auto parts store, '20% off sale'; blessed again.

The battery is trickling, so it 'should' be ready tomorrow after I do registration.  Actually reading the manual now.  Just wondering:

1. What octane recommended for this bike?

2.  has fresh Mobil 1 in it now, so how much can I ride it for awhile without the oil additive?  Will order some tomorrow anyway.

I did alot of research, asked questions and decided this was the best cycle for me.  The ad only appeared Friday.  trying to attach pics.

What year model? How many miles? You Just Brought it home,, from where? Individual or dealership?
Glad you found this place quickly. It was running yesterday, it's not broken, bet on the battery,,
You will be needing a meter. Harbor Freight stuff will do fine..
The cost of Mobil One is just more than reasonable IMO,so, I ran Rotella T.
$13.00 a gallon, not quart.. I've seen a Savage with just shy of 100,000 miles on it. That's been at least 10 years ago.. I'm sure,by looking at it, it Never saw any pampering, and yet, it was still in service..

The Point?
The engine doesn't Need a high DOLLAR oil

It needs for the lifters and cam to have enough ZDDP ,  and todays fancy oils are great, for cars and hydraulic lifters and all kindsa good stuff, but These are some dinosaur design engines.. run Regular Gas and lube its guts right and NEVER let it idle below 1,000RPM  and if you decide to pull the spark plug, blow the crud out of the cavity it sits in FIRST.. Don't ask how I know the importance of that..
