Title: Tire & Tube Size Question
Post by AnalogMan on 02/04/15 at 21:16:10

Hey Everyone!
I just bought a 06' S40.  It's in pretty good condition, but the tires are worn.
The rear tire won't even pass a safety check, and the front tire isn't far behind.
I had a question, I've been having a hard time finding a straight answer on.
Can you use a 130/90-15 tube on a 140/80-15 tire?

I can only find a 130/90-15 where I live, and was trying to avoid ordering offline.

Yes.  the IRC tube part number T20024 is for Tire Size: 130/90-15 and 140/80-15

The stock rear tyre is something of an orphan size. According to the techies on the site, and I'm not one. A 140 90 15 is far more readily available and apparently makes the speedo more accurate. The Shinko brand in this size apparently represents excellent value for money. I'm running a Michelein myself.

Tire choice should include the miles you ride each year....you really don't want to keep a tire for more then 4 years, as the rubber becomes hard and the traction is compromised.  If you only ride on sunny days, never ride hard, and only ride around town....maybe you can safely get a few more years out of your tires - but they do gradually get hard and provide less grip.

If you ride 3,000 or more miles a year...then the Michelin tires are a good value and you may ride enough to use up the tread.  If you ride 1,000 miles a year....then a cheaper tire may get you more miles for your dollars.

I rode hard and went through a rear tire a year, I ran about 5,000 a season, Texas has long seasons and I had good gear,so, some cold weather riding, too. I never got around to the Michelin, wish I had, I DO know that they made a huge difference on my car in the early 80's. I ran the Dunlop, and it never gave me the "I'm about to drop you" feeling the stock tires did.
I USED that insecure feeling to learn to ride in low grip places. I hated that tire, but knew it was teaching a valuable lesson. My riding style changed so fast when I ditched that piece of crap,, I got a cheap, GRIPPY,tire that made about 3,000 miles, went for another, it died in about 2,000 and didn't feel as sure footed, so, I started spending more and tried the Dunlop, if I was still riding I'd try Michelin and Dunlop and decide..
Orr, go Darkside, and stop changing tires every 5,000 miles..
But that's a whole nother topic.

Thanks everyone, I was able to find a 130/90-15 that fits.
I was going to go with the 140/90-15 tire.  But I didn't want to have to worry about rubbing under the fender.
Eventually, when I bob it I'll put on a bigger tire.
