I have been reading my owners manual and it calls for the cylinder head bolts to be re-torqued after 600 miles and thereafter annualy or every 3500 miles.

Are they talking about the removal of the head cover in each instance or just the ones you can access without splitting the head open and exposing the cam?

Yup,.. they want you to remove the head cover and retorque the bolts...

None of us actually do it... ;D ;D ;D...

Those bolts will remain fine for 50k miles...
I'd wait 'till somethin' starts leakin'... don't fix what ain't broken...

Thanks for the reply Serowbot. That is what I was afraid of. I think I will just do the easily accessable ones and hope for the best.

No, unless it's busted,don't touch the head bolts.. show me a lawnmower,car, truck, anything that NEEDS bolts that were torqued, messed with... if you have The Oil Leak, just fix that. I sold mine with 20,000 miles on it. I had been in at least twice, head cover off, uhh, yeah, once, to swap out the cam and chain, before Verslagen had the Verslavy, and when the clutch throw out broke and wrecked a chain guide.
I never touched the head bolts. Nothing good can come of it. Leave it alone until IT demands you work on it.

That does make sense justin_0_guy, this is the first motor I have seen that has called for a head bolt re-torque in years.

And, don't tighten just the ones that are easy to get. It'll leave you with uneven pressure on the head and might actually cause problems.

And....you just can't stick a wrench on them and re-torque them. They get corroded and kinda stuck.....so if you put a torque wrench on them at the proper setting - you won't budge them.

You have to take them off one at a time, clean the threads, apply never-seize.....and then torque them. Don't bother with it....they will be fine.
