Title: Exhaust Hot Coating
Post by zipidachimp on 01/29/15 at 23:24:13

Has anyone coated their exhaust pipe?  Wih mine off, I can see a lot of surface rust on the engine side, moderate rust elsewhere. Options are re-chroming or Hi-Temp coating. I'm taking it in for a quote tomorrow, but would appreciate input from those who have re-conditioned. Thanks  8-)

Then there is the cheap approach. OSPHO, dilute phosphoric acid, it literally transforms rust from iron oxide to iron phosphate. Costs less than$8.00 a quart at Kelly Moore. A recent name change, but I would expect them to be able to get it in your hands even if you call it Ospho, and describe its function. I kept my header alive after I sliced the thing into three pieces in order to remove the inner pipe. Where it was welded together wanted to rust, but it stayed nice enough that when I sold it,15,000 miles and 8 years later the buyer never even mentioned the condition of the header.
I keep a quart of Ospho in the paint department, always. A quart lasts for years. Don't get the gel. Works on chrome, a brass brush to get the stain, then a wipe with Ospho, let it work, rinse, dry. Or, just wipe it on and forget about it, I've done that, too.

Orr, you Could go down to the muffler shop and get a piece just the diameter you want, bent, and the fat end to"plug the jug" and crush the seal, get it mounted, install the muffler, prove it makes torque, will allow you to jet and run it,, and send That off for coating. Or chrome, or whatever suits ya,,,

Spoke to the guy that does the hot coating: it's .001" thick, beautiful medium glossy chromish-silver.
Uses ceramic-metallic, good to 1200 F. Most manifolds run about 800, our double-wall probably 500+. withstands knocks etc.
Cost is $56.00 including blasting and sales tax.
Pick up next Thurs, will post photo. 'no more blue pipe' !

Strikes me as a whole lot better than 'wrapping' a rusty pipe

When I get it back, I still have to install my verslagy, replace the clutch cable and try and replace my tank or install the raptor, so it will be a bit longer before it gets heat. Dudes, it's still winter here!
I will post a pic though. (never did understand the ugly wrappin' thing) 8-)

the wrap thing originated on race cars, not motos, as a way to keep the heat of the exhaust in the pipes, as opposed to underhood, and it turned out to have a slightly beneficial effect on power (it also hid ugly rusty headers) it then migrated to hot rods,  'rat bikes' and from there to bobbers, for that 'ugly / cool, built fot speed' thing
originally of course bobbing a bike was all about performance, not a 'look'
Nowadays folks just dismantle a bike abd call it 'bobbed'. It's no, it's just dismantled  ;D
