FreedomPop has begun the first $5 Wifi ONLY network system.   They are not the first, Republic Wireless has been and continues to run a hybrid system that uses cell service as a backup when wifi isn't available, and they do have a $5 wifi only system that has been in place for years and years.   T-Mobile also has a wifi offering, but only as a sub-node to their full price full service plans.

FreedomPop however has a new wrinkle, Boingo and all the other hot spot integrators are now an integral part of FreedomPop's offering.   This means your phone will actively search out the next strongest wifi signal and latch on to it automatically (if it is a Boingo member, etc).

This puts the wifi only phone closer to being real for common usage.   The trick is not there yet, really, it is but getting closer and closer.

And this raises the bar for Republic Wireless and T-Mobile (the only other wifi only suppliers) as they will have to integrate Boingo into their service and make hot spot switching all automatic like now too.
