Title: Overfill oil?
Post by killsport on 01/18/15 at 08:51:29

so I just did my first oil change (pat, pat). I put in T6 (with 1.5 oz of redline and 2.6 l oil). When I started the engine and checked the level when upright I had no bubble in it. Did I overfill? If so, what should I do?
Thanks!

how much did you put in?
did you change the filter?

I changed the filter and put in 2.6 liters plus 1.5oz of redline. I just took it for a 5 mile loop and it sounded fine... But I'm just a noob and don't want to hurt my Savage Beast!

When the engine is running most of the oil is in circulation.  Was it running when you looked threough the sight glass?

Yes, I started it and had my wife look at the level and look for a bubble at the top. No bubble just oil.

It usually takes 2qt for an oil change... 2.2qt with a oil/filter change...

You might want to let a little out, (probably won't hurt anything, but it may blow it out into the airbox)...

Oil level should be checked with the oil warm, but with the engine off, bike upright, and having been shut-off for at least a couple of minutes...
Oil level should show above middle of glass, but not fill the glass...

Thanks. Is there a way to let the oil out that doesn't involve the same bolt used to fully drain the oil? Or is that idiots thinking? Cause that sucker is tough to get to when you don't have a stand...

With the bike warm but not hot AND on the kickstand, the oil hits 1/2 way in the window. Thanks again guys!

I think you have too much oil in the bike.  2.6l is 2.7 quarts....and it should take 2.2.  You have about 1/2L too much.

The correct measure is with the bike level, and not running, you should be 1/2 way up the window.  Some folks are OK with it on the stand and just visible in the window.

What it the downside of too much oil?  The oil level is up where it can hit the bottom of the clutch basket, crankshaft, flywheel, etc......and that will throw a bunch of oil around, and waste horsepower.

It would be best is you took some out, and the drain plug is the only way I know to do it....unless you want to try and take out the cap over the magneto nut and tip the bike over on the left side to drain some out.....sounds messy to me.

... or if yer' really strong, you turn the bike upside-down and shake it out of the fill hole....
;D ;D ;D...

This is the easiest way to drain extra oil.
take some tape and make a pour spout under the port so it won't drip all down the bottom of the engine.
and no extra tipping needed, leave it on the kickstand, pull the plug and when it's finished, it'll be at about the right level.

Magneto nut? I've been called many things but not that! Seriously though, what/where is the magneto nut?

Technically, we have a stator and a rotor for our power needs.  It does have a ignition timing sensor in there as well.
A magneto sends a spark w/o a battery to the plug.  But it is a stretch to call it a magneto nut... but a rose is a rose by any other name.

he's referring to the timing port on the left side.

Wait

Killsport , I fill mine up to the middle of the window with it on the side stand all the time on purpose.  In 50,000 + miles I've never had a problem or run out of oil either.   Fact is I like a little extra oil flowing around in there.   Like Flint said earlier "most of the oil is in circulation when the motor is running anyway."  :)

That's true... fact is, a little extra won't hurt much,... and too much will blow out the CCV...
...but,... more than enough, is more than enough,... and oil is just sloshing around in the way of making power...

Using that logic,... even less will make more power?.. and it will for a very short while...
;D...

The perfect balance is in the sight-glass... enough to lube, but not to sludge...

Yep - but his bike in "running" on the sidestand....and the oil is in the sight window.  There is a big difference in the oil level when it is running.....and you won't even see the oil level in the sight glass when the bike is running.

Shut off, on the stand,on level ground, oil juuust visible... It's been done,no problem. Visible, running? Oh,that's too much oil,I'd say.

I'd dump it, into an empty catch, and see what comes outta there.
Oil is so much cheaper and easier to swap than,well,....
