Title: why do I feel like I just dodged a bullet?
Post by Skiprrdog on 01/13/15 at 12:31:53

Well, I finally pulled off the clutch cover today and all I can say is *whew*

Verslagen, if you are reading this I have a need to have your mod done to my tensioner, as well as a jetset. I sent you a PM, but got no indication that it was sent...

Yep....don't buy a lottery ticket for a while, as you may have used up a bit of your luck on this one.

How many miles on the bike.....what length of trips do you generally ride?

I have never actually ridden the bike. Picked it up fairly cheap about a month ago as a project that (I hope) is getting pretty close to a finish. Odometer shows 51K miles. So far I have:
--Changed oil, with new oil and air filter
--Cleaned and rebuilt carb
--Adjusted the valves
--Replaced shocks
--Got a nearly new HD Dyna muffler for it
And of course a lot of cosmetic work, painted all the tin, new mirrors, footpegs.

The compression is a little lower than ideal, but not at the service limit yet, so a top end will likely be the next thing... maybe a good time to go with a big bore upgrade [smiley=beer.gif]

As far as how much I would ride it, just to town, local, that sort of thing. Short hops, maybe 25 to 50 miles.

No worries, you had another 6-9 minutes of run time, easy.  ;D

That much, huh? I almost felt like it might fall out while I was standing there looking at it :o

To go 51,000 miles on the stock tensioner is a looong way.  The previous owner most likely took long rides when he fired up the bike.

Dave... it would seem like it. I suppose he may have done some service to those parts prior...no way to know, as I never met the owner. I do not know much about these, but what is the relationship of tensioner function to trip length?

demin... you definitely win that contest ;D Hey, I was looking at your picture, and I notice that the gasket in it does not look anything like the one on my bike, which is black, rigid, metal I think, sort of like a MHG. Is that a stock gasket? :-?

It is believed that the number of heat cycles is what makes the chain stretch....not necessarily the miles ridden.  So if you go on 200 short trips.....or 200 long trips.....we believe the chain stretches about the same.

That is why some folks can do 50,000 miles before they need a Versy....and other folks need them at 10,000 miles.

It looks stock to me... at least it looks like everyone that's ripped in half when you take the clutch cover off.

I would think it was.I got the bike with about 7,000 miles on it.I doubt if anybody opened it up prior.

Skipprdog:

With 51,000 miles...your gasket could most likely be nearing the "petrified" state!

Dave.. good to know, for when I finally get this beast running; petrified..LOL

Verslagen... maybe those were older ones; I just now got an order from Ayers with that gasket in the box, and it appears to be a 'genuine Suzuki' part...identical (metal) to the one I took off of it...
