Title: 87 Winter Build Advice
Post by ryanwilliam on 01/07/15 at 13:27:24

I've just purchased an 87 Suzuki Savage. This winter I plan to make a few adjustments and modifications.  Any advice and recommendations are greatly appreciated.
The bike is mostly stock, besides the paint job.  The sissy bar is also missing  :(.

I've only ridden the bike once, and it is currently in a heated basement.  I should be able to work on it there.  I should mention I'm 6'0'' and 185lbs, so I plan on adding forward controls and new handlebars.
I've started a list of modifications to make, please share your Suzuki Wisdom with me, I'll appreciate any help I can get with this project.

Performance
1. Verslavy Cam Chain Adjuster
2. Idle Mixture Plug Mod
3. Starter Gear Upgrade
4. Harley Muffler
5. Lancer Jet Set

Appearance / Comfort
1.Ed L's 4" Forward Controls
2.New Handlebars (Z Bar, Drag Bars?)
3.Saddlebags
4.Sissy Bar

Progress on my build will depend on funding.  I plan on changing the oil so I thought the cam chain adjuster would be a place to start.  My goals for this spring are reliability, comfort, and performance.  I'll worry about asthetics later  ;).

You might consider a Starter Gear Upgrade...

If the bike is past 25k miles,.. I'd replace the stator while I was in there...

How old are those tires?... more than 5 years, replace them...

The tires are a year old, about 1000 miles on them.  And thank you, I'll look into the starter gear.

Anything else I should be looking for?  22k miles on an 87, so I want to be sure I've covered all my bases.

Unless you are looking to move the battery box and moves things around for looks....I wouldn't recommend changing to the cone filter.  The stock filter and air box works just fine, is waterproof, is quieter, and does a good job of filtering.  You can add a drop in K&N if you want a bit better air flow - but be aware that the K&N or cone filter needs to be cleaned and oiled and it does add to the maintenance routine and requires you to buy the special filter oil.  The stock paper filter works well, can be blown out with an air compressor, and does a good job of filtering.  Changing to a cone filter will do very little for the performance of the bike.....there are several other things (CV carb, exhaust header, exhaust port) that are more restrictive than the stock filter.

Thanks for the feedback!  I will revamp my list.  I've been looking into the starter gear upgrade.  If anyone finds the parts I need please let me know.  Thanks again!
