Hello I have posted 2 photos the first being the stock triple tree, and I can see clearly that the steering stem will press out. The second photo is the replacement triple tree but it looks like the steering stem has been welded in. I'm guessing I can remove the weld to uncover a steering stem similar to the first photo, allowing me to press it out?
I wanted to get advice on this before I proceed.

I would give some real thought to replacing the replacement.

You already know what needs to be done.
Grind off the weld and press out the stem.

Ah I gotcha ;) I am thinking that if I use a flap disc to remove the weld I should press it out. I am assuming our stock stem has a lip and a retaining ring holding it in place. Which makes me wonder why the Kawasaki KZ1000p stem is welded.Does it have a retaining ring as well as being welded? I can easily re-weld it back in place.
Its the same vintage as my Savage, 1988. So I would have thought the technology would be similar.

I wasn't 100% sure and didn't want to do something that couldn't be undone.
Yes I plan to reshape and re size the Kawasaki stem to match the Suzuki stem.

I did something similar, but instead of taking it apart, I left the tree on.
add a plate to whatever available and add weight to balance the tree.
If you have a big enough lathe, bolt it to the head plate.
I did it on a 7 HF lathe, hung the tree off the end of the lathe... lot of fun.

Weld beads penetrate - so I would guess a flap wheel is going to have a tough time with this job. If you remove the weld bead....there is still going to be a weld 1/8" or so down where the two parts are welded together.....and I suppose a enough grinding would eventually remove enough material to remove the welded portion.

This job is best tackled on a lathe. If the lathe is too small to accept the whole bottom yoke and stem....then cut the yoke apart and just leave the center part with the stem, and then put it in the lathe.

Besides,I've priced flapper wheels and I know how long they last,, that won't be Nearly cost effective,AND you can't focus it. The bottom of that thing would be a mess. A milling tool in a drill press or someone who knows what they are doing with a lathe

I found this which might be a option if I cant mount the bottom triple into the lathe. Using a lathe to remove the weld.
Taking into account what you said Dave about the weld penetrating deep.

a four jaw chuck will allow you to mount the tree to the lathe.

Or a faceplate...

That and a live center on the tail stock and you've got it made.
Turn down the spindle for the bearings 1st.
Then cut more threads as necessary.
Check it all out on the frame for fit and function.
When happy, cut the surplus spindle off.

Yes I see what you mean verslagen.
The guy who is going to do it is a retired tool maker and is handy with a lathe. His lathe is big and has lots of different attachments. I'm sure he could set something up.
I guess I should have just taken it to him but I like to get a lot of different ideas.
I will keep you posted and take pics of how it turns out.

In future I need to research more thoroughly before asking questions here. :-[ I believe a 4 jaw chuck will hold the triple bottom and with some dialing in should work fine. ;)

The advantage of using the faceplate is he can mount a center in it and also in the tailstock.
The spindle will held by centers and the tree dogged to the faceplate.
Very easy to set up.
