ok thank you. when I asked the guy about it I had to explain what a petcock was and what it did :-? so I kinda knew I was in trouble and had to show him were it was on the four wheeler to pull the part up and he started asking what year I needed and it was just a big mess

Next time you need something and it is the same for years,as in THEIR PETCOCK, tell them to look up the part number for Their 4 wheeler petcock for different years. WHEN the computer Shows him the same part number for multiple years MAYBE he will grasp that a company USES parts they already have the manufacturing process and equipment for..at every opportunity. Ehhh, who am I kidding..
I'd be happier if you would tell me the guy was young.

well hate to burst your bubble but it wasn't a young guy( or at least to me) ;D. just one that shouldn't be working behind the parts counter

There are a number of folks who have run the stock petcock for extended periods.

There are also several folks every year who post on this forum that have a crankcase full of gasoline, weird running problems, a bike that seems to run out of fuel when the tank is still half full, or are left stranded along the side of the road when the bike stops running.  If (when) the stock vacuum petcock does fail, you have a choice....you can pay $ 95.85 to buy another Suzuki vacuum petcock - or you can spend $ 30 for a Yamaha Raptor manual petcock.

I am not sure if the type of fuel and ethanol content is the problem, or if the bike sits for extended periods, changes in the air cleaner, or the fact that some of these bikes could be more than 20 years old - but it is a certain fact that the stock petcock does fail for some folks.

I still had the stock one on my '86 'til I did a tank change.Around 50,000 miles. The '98 I have I had to put a Raptor on it.14,000 miles.I always used it on the '86 too.I would let the gas get low enough to have to switch to R.And I kept it oiled up with WD or whatever.

And they start to fail right around the 7 year mark... sweatin' yet?
there's also a rebuild kit you can use.

My 2007 petty had started to fail when I got the bike (2013) with 3009 miles on the bike
methinks it's time, not mileage

That's a shame....you are going to get a Chinese copy of the real Yamaha part.  You should have ordered the correct Yamaha part if you are looking to gain reliabilty.

May SAY Yamaha, but the tubes will probably be skinny, low flow. All money saving ideas and parts that will work have,I believe, been worked out by the people here. Several have bought the cheap petcock, no joy, at least the loss is not a big deal. Hey,maybe you'll get a good one! That'd be great..

An eBay listing for the real deal Yamaha part:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-OEM-YAMAHA-RAPTOR-660-FUEL-PETCOCK-01-05-/200590318612?pt=Motors_ATV_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2eb41d5c14&vxp=mtr

An eBay listing for the Chinese copy:

If you don't see the part number 5LP-24500-01-00 and the white box with Yamaha printed on it.....keep looking until you do.  It will cost about $ 30 to get the genuine part.

The Chinese copy may work for you, but maybe problematic.
1. the outlet is usually under sized, 1/4" vs. 5/16"
This will restrict flow at WFO and you'll have to back off.
It'll also have issues of clearing the bubbles out of the fuel line.
2. notation maybe in Chinese, good luck with that.
3. poor fit and function, daily operation may wreck the seals before too long.

I got mine off of amazon it was $20 but I had free 2 day shipping, since I tried the free trial of amazon prime. I found it by this number 5LP-24500-01-00 thanks for Serowbot for the number

I took the part number (courtesy of this forum) to my local bike shop and bought it there.  May have cost a little more than on-line but I had it immediately and supported a local shop.

The local rip-off artists here (Yamaha dealer) quoted me $42.95 for it. I don't mind paying a little more but that's a bit much.

Chinese.. well that figures. Luckily, the one on my bike is not bad yet. If the 'Yamaha Raptor' part comes and is Chinese, Ill just throw it in the pile with the rest of the Chinese junk. Maybes one of these days Ill have enough to build an entire motorcycle with, some sort of 'Chinese Frankenbike' ;D

Yeah, I just checked on Amazon. If you have Prime, you can get it with free shipping for less than $22.00. No Prime.. there is a seller selling it for a  ;) buck less with free shipping...
