Finally, I got rid of the airbox and fabricated an intake for my UNI pod fiter. I will still be using side covers and plan on a mini battery in the future. If I only ride in fare weather ,do I still need oil on a foam filter?

Yes, the oil is what traps the dirt. On a paper filter the pores are small and the dirt is bigger....so the dirt cannot pass though the paper. On a foam filter the pores are large and the dirt can pass though - except that the dirt comes in contact with the oil stuck on the sides of the pores......and the dirt is then stuck to the oil while the air continues to flow through. When the dirty air is making the twists and turns to get through the open cell foam....the mass of the dirt makes it bump into the sides of the foam cells while it is trying to make all the twists and turns.

If you don't oil the foam.....the dirt won't stick and it will just flow right on through to the engine. There is a special oil that is made for foam filters, it is really sticky....be sure to use rubber gloves if you apply that kind of oil. I keep a set of vinyl gloves with my bottle of filter oil and reuse them.

You have a good arrangement for the filter. Keeping the original rubber boot helps to provide good air flow. I did a similar set up....but with only a portion of the boot, and a smaller battery below the filter. We might even be using the same filter...mine just has an extra red pre-filter over the black foam. The inner black foam is oiled - the outer red filter is not.
