Title: Carb Rebuild
Post by rickj on 12/10/14 at 22:34:20

Looking for advice on rebuilding a carbureator.  Something is messed up with the vacuum fuel feed.  Petcock has to be set to PRIME or the engine floods.  Frequent gas puddles occur when the bike is parked.  Choke is never required to start.  Strangely, the spark plug is not black, but gray.

One of the operating symptoms, is that the bike only get about 45 MPG.  Having consulted several other savage riders, I've determined that the LS650 typically gets 55 - 65 MPG.

Any advice or thoughts really appreciated.

Tell us about the petcock you have on the fuel tank.  Do you still have the vacuum operated petcock?  Have you done this test?

It could be that the petcock diaphragm has failed, and the fuel is flowing down the vacuum line....where fuel is not supposed to go.

Do this test.....all of it!

Yeah, petcock can cause carb looking problems... start there.

I had almost the exact same problems, but worse gas mileage, turns out it was a combination of a bad petcock and the jets incorrectly sized.

I would check that petcock first.  Use the link Dave gave you.  Follow the instructions.

I would get rid of the stock vaccum operated pet clock. Once mine went bad I spend the $40 on the raptor peacock. One less hose connection, looks cool, and you won't have to worry about pesky peacock problems anymore.
