Title: Oil spot below kick stand
Post by spearheadss on 12/03/14 at 18:54:52

First, a little about the bike. I believe it is all stock except for the Raptor petcock, I replaced the original with. I bought the bike last spring and believe the Plug/Cap leaks. I need to check that out. As it is winter time here I will be tearing the bike down. I just have no clue as to where the oil spot is coming from. Any suggestions?

Are you sure that's oil?
edit: verify that it's not gas leaking before doing anything. Starting the bike with a leak like that would start a fire.

Make sure the bolts holding the pegs in as well as the bolt by kickstand. Those go through the frame and the engine case and out the other side through the upper heat shield - when they're loose, you'll get a small leak. (that doesn't look like a small leak)

After that, check around the stator cover and shifter seals.

What year is the machine and how many miles/kms?

when oil comes out the top... sooner or later it'll make it's way to the bottom.

Man, I hate it when the kickstand springs a leak. ;D

That's what mine looked like when I bought it.

From what it looks like, you have oil leaking around your fins as well.  Mine was a mess like that and I narrowed it down to a leaky plug.  Granted I am new at this and have yet to complete the repair.

Start with sealing up the plug and go from there.

No.....start with tightening the motor mount/peg bolts.....that is only a 10 minute chore.  Then get to the head plug - which is a 6 hour chore the first time you do it.

Similar to the leak I was getting...
2006...never leaked and then I noticed a leak right about there...the kickstand was getting some oil on it too...

I think I isolated it to the stator bolt right above the rear of the shift lever...i've snugged it up (be careful those bolts are easy to snap) and it appears to have gone away...

I also snugged up the peg bolts that run through the engine case just for good measure.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I'll get to checking those out and then post when I figure it out.

It can't possibly be a leaky kickstand. I just put new rings in there.

mine leaves a puddle there too,was thinking it was coming from clutch cover and trickling along the bolts or the oil bung, only things I've touched...lately  ::)

I had the same leak right after I had done some work on the bike.  Tightening up the motor mount foot-peg bolts seemed to have done the trick.  No more leaking kickstand, one month and counting   :D

It is hard to stop directly on those oily spots, they are just too fast.   :o

Thank you all for the help. I tightened the peg screws and that seems to have stopped the leak.

Philmh I do have a leak up there and I am going to try ordering the Verslagen Head Plug replacement at the end of this month. If he has any left.

Dave the head plug sounds like a fun replacement.

I am starting to spend money on the bike now. I finally talked my wife into letting me turn it into a bobber. I convinced her it was cheaper than a new bike.
