Title: What should I check when replacing cam chain?
Post by Iceman4193 on 12/02/14 at 21:18:28

Hey guys, I am looking into replacing the cam chain myself, or having it done depending on the complexity of the job. I have a 2001 with 19000 miles on it and it should be about time to replace the thing.
What else should I be checking for or possibly replace while i have it apart to make the most of my time?

Also if anyone can provide some insight on how to best to this job I would love to hear

With the Verslavy, you wont have to take the head cover off, and you get another 10,000 miles out of that chain. Replacing the chain is pretty involved - figure 3-4 hours of reading and picture looking before you grab a wrench.

To swap the cam chain tensioner, you need to have the clutch cover off. So, with just that off:
- check the clutch spring tension wear.
- clutch difficult to adjust? Replace the push rod with the larger size to compensate for clutch disc wear.
- install a dyna muffler
- stick a magnetic rod in to the engine case and see if you can catch some loose slivers of steel.
- new oil filter.
- clean and lube the brake spring and cable.
- be sure to use anti-seize on the exhaust header bolts.
- treat yourself to a shiny new clutch cover gasket :-)

I just replaced my cam chain and included the Verslavy modified cam chain tensioner.  I'm a mediocre mechanic.  In addition to the info from 1st2know here's what I found useful:

- get the photos of a Savage tear down on the site
- if you decide to replace the cam chain, make a head cover bolt pattern template to place the bolts in as you remove them
- I used lots of zip lock bags to keep smaller loose parts together
- get or make a motorcycle stand (I used the inexpensive 2x4 model)

Good luck!!
