Title: Engine Stops When Put in Gear
Post by rickj on 12/02/14 at 19:56:38

2001 LS 650, 23K miles.  Performed cam chain tensioner maintenance, Versy mod etc.  Put everything back together and got it running.  Thought I was mechanic!  NOT!

Engine starts and runs smoothly.  As soon as I put it in gear the engine stops.  Just like hitting the STOP RUN or turning off ignition.

What have I missed?

I was about to say malfunctioning safety switch but Versy beat me to it.

Yep, like Versy indicated....something is wrong with your safety interlock between the neutral light and side stand switch.

When the neutral light goes out.....the switch on the side stand has to see that the stand is up.  If not.....the system kills the ignition.

The neutral light is controlled by the blue wire that comes out of the bottom of the right side engine case.....and you removed that case to work on the chain tensioner.  The kick stand safety switch is on the left side of the bike where this kick stand mounts, and you might have pinched a wire or damaged it in some way.

Now,IF you goobered the wire, don't get excited and go cutting on it..Just post pics or describe it unless you have no doubt that you can win it.

Thanks everyone.  I'm not home to try, but I'm guessing it is the kickstand.  Duh .  .  .

I've had the 650 on a M/C stand so I could work on it AND yes, the kickstand is down even though the rear tire is in the air.  I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed so my ignorance is like a safety net.  I don't know enough to REALLY screw things up.   :-*
