Title: It starts up but  it wont idle
Post by BigCanTikiMan on 11/25/14 at 13:12:00

So have 1987 Savage. It belong to a friend and ran great for 1 year. About a year ago it wont start. So i bought it off him for good price. i thought it was the idle gear it turned out to be the starter gear that was missing teeth. I replace the starter gear and put the bike back together. but then the float got stuck and gas was coming out one of the bowl vents. I took the carb off and clean it. So bike starts up when i use starter fluid but cant get it to idle. Yesterday i turn the idle screw all the way and it idle but randomly it would idle really high as i rode it. so i would let the clutch out and it would stop. Is it getting to much air or gas or not enough?

Yes, it is getting too much air or gas or not enough!

Sitting for long periods tends to plug up the pilot jet, and unless you cleaned it well and held it up to the light to confirm the tiny little passage was clear.....that would be the first thing I would check.
