Curiosity questions...

So I took my MSF class in Arizona and got my license endorsement. I trained on a Yamaha Star and I've found that the Suzuki seems more maneuverable. I'm still a total newbie, but I'm learning a few things and enjoying the bike (I'm nervous but still getting comfortable).

1) The gear shift points seem higher on the Suzuki versus the Yamaha. I read here somewhere a chart that shows the shift points. Not a big deal, but it seems that I need to keep the revs up for smoother shifting.

2) It seems the Suzuki engine runs a bit rough at startup but smooths out. It seems slightly hesitant. Do others experience the same?

Since the Suzuki is a single and does not have the inertia of another cylinder to keep it going, you will need to rev slightly higher. I don't mean 1000 rpms. Just slightly higher, maybe 100-200 or so.

If you push the choke home as soon as you fire it will run rough until it warms up. It will still do this even if you leave the choke partially on for a mile or so. The owners handbook recommends 1st to 2nd 12mph 2n to 3rd 19 mph 3rd to 4th 24 mph and 4th to 5th 31 mph. Aside from the first to second change, these speed are absurdly low, you may want to shift out of second at 30 mph 3rd at 45 mph and fourth at 50 mph and into fifth at 55 mph. Try to keep your revs over 1000 at idle.

Yeah, shifting from 1st at 12 mph is right where I was 'feeling' it needed to be. Thanks for the speed info. I found the rpm/speed chart discussion: http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1341162964.
