Title: Oil
Post by twelveport on 11/15/14 at 16:33:54

Changed my oil today and after I had the new oil in the engine w/filter back in place, I noticed on the filler cap it was stamped; 10W40. Then it dawned on me what I had just done. I put 20W50 in, same as I did for my son's Harley Sportster. My garage stays heated all the time, so should not be any problems starting in the winter months unless left out in the cold. That would make it crank harder. Just had another Senior moment!   ::)

The weight of the oil shouldn't be a huge issue.

What might hurt the bike is the type of oil. What did you use?

I was at the dealer getting a new filter so I went ahead and got the Suzuki brand. I just had 20/50 on my brain because I had just changed the oil on my son's Harley 5 days before. I'm sure it will be OK, maybe even run a little quieter. Just wondering if any others had made the same goof? LOL  :-/

Mostly,.. the oil will be a little thicker at start-up...
It may take one extra turnover to start... the first minute running, the oil will be a bit thicker, so be gentle that first minute (you should do that anyway)...
After that,... it's fine...

Nobody actually rides in 20degree weather anyway... so it's not as critical as in a car...
I still have 20-50 in my bike, because I haven't ridden enough to need an oil change this year...
...(2 bikes and no time syndrome)... :-/...

That is just what I was thinking guys. Thanks!  ;D

Hey, it was 23°F here yesterday morning when I went for a ride! Ok, I admit, it was a short ride. Only about 10 miles round trip but I couldn't resist. The bike was calling to me!   ;D

Correction... only insane people ride in 20 degrees...  ;D...

;)...

The funny thing is... I thought the same thing!  ;D

Strange voice in my head: "Are you nuts? It's freezing outside! Aaaaaa, go for it!"

Kris, you really have a 650 Savage that gets 73 MPG? Best I ever got was 45 MPG, but I don't baby it along.  :D

Serobot!  Has it ever got as low as 20 in Arizona? My buddy in Apache Junction quits riiding when it drops below 65

20 Degrees, it's hard for the rest of us to realise you guys are still in Fahrenheit, needed the spell check on that.

It got down to 18f once... but that was the low record for the decade...
We do drop below freezing a couple of days a year...

I'll ride in the upper 40's,... lower 40's for a short jaunt...(heavily wrapped... ;D)...  that's rare...
Mostly,... Oct. to June, is our riding season... with temps from the 60's to 80's...
It's 38f this morning,... and I turned on my central heater for the first time...but, temps are going back up...

I couldn't possibly ride in 20f... :-?...
... not over 110f either... 8-)...

I don't even know anybody who use's the metric on temps.  ;D

I have ridden in 20f deg weather.  It's not that bad. Just bundle up really good.  I have a one piece insulated cold weather riding suit.  It does wonders from helping to keep the cold off of you.  A couple jackets along with that and a few pair of socks. Thick, insulated gloves are really good for your hands.

I do have to say, though.  I don't do that very often. But, if you have to, you have to.

We have non-US members and almost all of the rest of the world is metric. Guess we should keep that in mind especially talking about temperatures.

Back about 1973 or 74, I had a 175 cc BSA 2 stroke. It was in a basket when I got it. I had to have the piston turned to fit Evenrude piston rings. When I finally got it running, it was -5 below zero F. (American) I could not resist taking it for a very short spin, about a mile. My sinuses were frozen. Enough of that! LOL  :o

My bike does indeed get 70+ mpg. It still runs the stock jets though.

20 degrees really wasn't that bad except my hands were frozen. I need to get some better gloves. The rest of me was as warm as could be.

So how does it get that good MPG? Mine was just tuned at the dealer. 45MPG best I ever got. :-[

I don't have an S40 or Savage, but do have a comment on oil viscosity. I road a 2005 Kawasaki KLR650 for about 15,000 miles before trading it in on another bike. I had been running a 10W-40 motor oil, and had no problems. I switched to a 15W-40 oil made for diesel engines, as I wporked at a large truvk shop, and we used this Delo 400 15W-40 oil in the big rigs. In my KLR, when I would fire the bike off cold, it would go into a nasty knocking noise, which I could not put up with. I switched back to the 10W-40 oil, and the knock went away, never to return. One wouldn't think the difference between a 10W-40, and a 15W-40 oil would be noticeable, but in that bike it was. Cooler weather made it worse, and I rode year round in the Seattle/Tacoma area of Washington State.

twelveport, I don't know where you're located so I don't know how your climate compares to mine, but I JUST changed my oil yesterday, 20-50 would work here mainly during the summertime. Here it doesn't get much colder than freezing except on few occasions.

I had 10-40 yamalube in it because the parts guy said it was better than Suzuki oil (btw on the 2014 model I don't have "10-40" stamped into the oil fill cap, take that for what you will) and I switched to the Shell Rotella T Triple protection that everyone on here recommends, 15w-40. Just that little swap and the engine sounded SOOO much "smoother". I highly recommend considering that for your next oil swap. this was my 2nd change on the bike and it only has 1350 miles so I'm sure thats a factor as well.

Shell Rotella T Triple protection is cheap too! $14 a gallon at Wally World.

Just some food for thought.

And on the note of riding in the cold, it was 35 deg. today and I rode 15 miles down the freeway at 75mph...It was nice, so long as I kept my helmet visor shut. Otherwise my eyes would freeze up.  :o

When that happened with my KLR, I was still living near Tacoma, Washington. I don't have that bike any more. Actually am thinking about a used 2009 S40 up for sale in Hilo, Hawaii. It's only got about 2000 miles. I joined this forum years ago, as I have always liked the Savage/S40's. I've owned a lot of thumpers over 53 plus years of riding, but they were all dual sports.

We have a couple of scooters here, and I can run 20W-50 in them with no problems due to the always warm temperatures here.

Never been to Hawaii, I'm sure it must be nice.

The Savage/S40 is an excellent motorcycle if you just want to do lower speed cruising. A load of fun, very light and nimble, but still has a little bit of umph to get up and move if need be. I take mine up to 80-85ish sometimes, but would not recommend continuous riding at those speeds. 65 is it's happiest "fast" speed, in my opinion.

We have no freeways on the big island of Hawaii. The main highways are posted 55mph. Much of my riding is from my house into Hilo and back. That's about a 25 mile round trip, maybe 80% on the highway. The S40 would do just fine here.

My bike is a LS650 Savage, 2003. I like it since I added handlebar weights to dampen some of the vibrations of a thumper. But I'm now 64 years old and starting to think that "grampa needs a softer ride." LOL Been looking at the new Indians, but still have a lot of money to feed my classic 1954 GMC Custom, so I'm going to have to settle for a Road King. Nice bike and a lot softer ride, especially if I can find available grandma to ride with. LOL  :P

There's your problem!   ;D

I still run the stock jets so it runs pretty lean. Lean = good mileage. I probably average 40-50 mph on most of the roads around here. Rarely does the bike ever see over 55-60 mph. It just doesn't feel happy above those speeds. It's a cruiser not a race bike. I use it as such.
