Title: Rosetta and Philae and the comet
Post by old_rider on 11/11/14 at 21:00:14

Well the European Space Agency is live now (has been for 10 hours) for the broadcast from the command center.
I am very interested in this comet landing, as it could lead to bigger things later on in space travel.
We could actually put small instruments on comets and asteroids that are out bound from the system and go farther and faster than we could travel with modern propulsion and slingshot assists.
Very interesting  8-)

One hour to separation of the Philae lander and they start having video errors......sigh..... :(

Well they got separation confirmation.... now awaiting for pics and proof... should happen around 5:10 am  cst

Well, there was a step I left out.... Rosetta has confirmed telemetry signal from the separated lander Philae.... it is now on a trajectory to the comet.

The lander has successfully landed and sending telemetry!

She lost me at her PC required restructuring of a "quote"..
Its sad that so many women cant accept the masculine general term for mankind.. Where no man has gone before,, That really does include those who have no thingy,,

ROFL.... I missed the landing... fell asleep, was up too late...

Not sure if the harpoon stuck.... awaiting more information...
or a retry if it hasn't...

Lots of tipsy/rolling hand gestures on the live feed....no sound so cannot hear what they are saying.

I don't think it stuck or the data makes it look like it is wobbling?  or landed at an extreme angle.

Hope they update soon....

LOL, its good to know that I can still interpret body language as good as I used to (son thinks i'm psychic)

I was correct in that the Philae lander did land.... and the harpoons did not stick.
Also Philae's data shows that it "wobbled" after landing, which has been interpreted as lift off and turning. (It bounced and spun)
The radio signal and data showed that after about 4 min, Philae stopped turning.... either the gyro kicked back in, or it landed for the second time... they don't know, if the nozzle on top fired after the bounce, if so it could have re-landed.
At this point there is a lot of data to go through. Philae could just be floating away....they have to wait for data. :-? :-/
I am hoping that the actual center harpoon actuated even though the feet did not, I am not sure how long the umbilical on the center harpoon is... ;)

Tonight,Science Channel,8 o'clock, Central..
Landing on a comet: Rosetta Mission
Be there!

And no, the harpoons didn't deploy, last I heard.

This whole mission has blown me away. The enormity of what they have done is simply mind boggling. Flying the thing for ten years and three "gravity boosts" to catch up to a comet three kilometers in diameter is amazing enough. Then to land a probe on the comet, run most of the tests they had planned, with the possibility of more tests when they get nearer the sun is really an accomplishment unprecedented in human scientific history.
