Title: Solve this riddle for me
Post by Kris01 on 11/11/14 at 17:45:36

I read this riddle on a bathroom wall today. It's funny how you find some things in the weirdest places.   ;D

You have $0.00 in your pocket.

You borrow $50 from from each of 2 friends. You now have $100.

You go shopping and spend $97. You are given $3 in change.

From the $3 change, you give your 2 friends $1 each and keep $1 for yourself. You now owe your 2 friends $49 each.

$49 + $49 + the dollar in your pocket = $99.

Where did the other dollar go?

Dadgum if I know, BUT, you started out penniless and now you've got$97.00 worth of Stuff AND a dollar in your pocket.

And, you're only $98.00 in debt.

Hmm, you're in debt 98 bucks, you've GOT 97 in Stuff and 1 in your pocket.
Interesting question..really.

Take your diploma back to school and ask for a refund because it didn't work.

Duh. I'm not real bright, but I can lift heavy things. But I can see where the dollar is.

okay, so to look at this another way, each of your friends loaned you money for a $97 shirt, they split the cost = $48.50 each, but they didn't have exact change so they gave you $50 each. they gave you $3 too much for the shirt.  you gave them  back a dollar each of their $3 change and spent the other $1 on a scratch off ticket hoping to make enough money to never have to think like this crazy word quiz again!

you've used the money they loaned you to pay back the on that loan. effectively, they gave you $50 each, $48.50 on the shirt, each, $0.50 each on the dollar you keep  = $49,  and $1 each that you paid back to them, this $1 is subtracted from the $50 loaned = $49

so in effect they only loaned you $98

 :o

now my brain hurts

It is a trick.....they are manipulating you to add the dollar in your pocket.........when you should be subtracting that dollar instead.

Friend 1........$ 50 - $ 1 = $ 49
Friend 2........$ 50 - $ 1 = $ 49
                                    --------
                     TOTAL.....  $ 98
Your pocket    (minus).......$  1
                                     --------
Total spent                       $ 97

Because when the riddle is given to you....they manipulate you to think about the issue wrongly.  The total paid is not the $100....it is only $97.

I did the same thing with this....but it was the 3 guys going to a hotel and paying for a $30 room.....at $10 each.  Later the hotel manager decides they overpaid and sent the baggage clerk to the room to return $5 to the men.  Knowing they can't divide the $5 evenly between the 3 men, the baggage clerk puts $2 in his pocket and returns $1 each to the men.  The men therefore paid $ 9 each for a total of $ 27, the baggage clerk has $2, so the total is $27 + $2 + $ 29....where did the other $1 go?  The proper solution is that there was not $ 30 paid...the hotel has $25, the baggage clerk has $2 ($27 total), and the 3 men have paid $9 each which is the $27 and all is accounted for.

SHHH!,, Be Quiet,, Im still at 25 + 2 is 27,,,

Yea, I GET that it "Which way ya look at it".. What I Dont get is WHY is it so easy to allow the question to drive a guy away from seeing it straight in the first place.. I gotta admit,, I hadda read that first one a coupla times before I found where the error in the thinking was,, I KNEW a dollar didnt vanish,,
Had there been ANY mention of DC, or a Senator, I might NOT have been so sure a dollar Didnt Just evaporate,, they sure seem to do that around politicians and such..

But, of course I found the right answer,, But,, I just get a feeling there is a deeper understanding to be found ,, like,, you slice a weenie 24 times,, how many pieces O weenie you GOT now?
