Title: Smokes a little at startup
Post by carcaveman on 11/09/14 at 13:53:18

Is it normal that my bike smokes a bit at startup. The smoke is coming from the exhaust, not just the exhaust hole, but the bellows area (not sure if that's the right term). After about 30 seconds it totally stops and the bike idles fine. It seems that oil is settling somewhere and gets burned off when I start it.  It's a stock bike and I checked the oil level and it's above the marks. Got it from the dealer that way. I didn't want to mess with it. If it was too full of oil, would this happen? Could there be a bad seal or loose valve seals?

Thanks, David.

Black smoke = fuel
Blue/grey = oil
white = water...

Water comes from condensation in the pipe... it's very common to all vehicles and harmless... (other than causing rust eventually)...

Good point on the color. I should have mentioned it's bluish in color. Also the smell is of oil not just water vapor.

Thanks.

Wouldn't be too hard to loosen the drain plug until it started to run a small stream when you wiggle it or drips quickly.
Drain off a small amount until it gets in the proper spot between the lines.
Run it a few times and see if it still smokes.

The savage isn't real sensitive to overfill.
But, if not being able to see the top line sends you into a conniption...
remove the timing port cover and it will flow out to about the right level when vertical.

You could be on the right track : a short period of smoking on startup can be a sign of leaky valve stem seals or worn valve guides. When the engine sits ,oil can drain down the valve stem into the combustion chamber. No biggie but will eventually carbon up the back of the valve head.
Not sure what you meant by the "bellows area" tho.
Had a bmw k75 that smoked like a train if it was left on the side stand overnight. Stand should have been on the sump side of the engine...

Yeah bellows wasn't the right word. Most of the smoke is coming out of the area where of the exhaust system where the single tube goes into the larger end piece of the exhaust. I guess that's the muffler.
