Title: wintertime oil change
Post by phatts27 on 11/04/14 at 02:59:34

Hello all,

Today I plan on giving her some fresh oil and a new filter. It's getting pretty cold out as well. I see that some people recommend 10-30 for the cold times.

Should I go the 10-30 route instead of the manufacturer recommended 10-40? Assuming I don't put too many miles on her this winter, will 10-30 be safe until the spring time? Will the warmer weather cause any relative problems? Thank you

Brands?

Thanks,
Ed

The 10 is the winter part of the designation.....it shows that in cold weather the oil is equivalent to a 10W oil.  The 30 or 40 is the hot weather part of the multi-viscosity oil, and shows that in hot weather the oil performs like a 30 or 40 weight.

In cold weather the 10W-30 or 10W-40 will act nearly the same.  In hot weather the 30 will be thinner than the 40.

I would use the 10W-40......and in the summer I use Rotella T 15W-40.

Gotta get some oil

Good, getting the oil, finding a thin pan, and driving a half hour to my bike it only took me an hour from start to finish. I was pleasantly surprised that a.zone  had motorcycle oil and it was cheaper than the automotive grade is. Thanks again

Yeah I did, it seemed like a no-brainer. Looks like I'm doing another oil change today.

You might be OK.....not sure.  This is a cam with 17,000 miles on it, and most likely it was an oil with low ZDDP levels.  Modern motorcycles oils are getting low ZDDP levels in them, as the bikes are becoming fuel injected and have oxygen sensors in the exhaust.  This forum has a lot of combined years of experience from all the members.....and we try to pass that experience on.

Is Mobil 1 racing 10w-40 the same as Mobil 1 racing 4t 10w-40?

I am guessing that it is.....as the other Mobil 1 racing oils for cars does not come in the 10w-40 rating.  (I will see if that is true...and we might need to update the thread to include the "4T" wording).
