Title: Motorcycle Steering Stem Bearing Size Chart
Post by paulmarshall on 10/28/14 at 19:48:43

Hello all according to this chart their are a number of different front ends that can be swapped with our Savage.
When I scroll down and find our bike it is listed under the following dimensions which I am struggling to relate to our front ends.
Upper: 25 x 47 x 15
Lower: 30 x 55 x 17
What do these numbers mean?

OK I have worked out that 30 is the diameter of the stem at the bottom just above the bearing, and 25 is the diameter of the stem just below the top bearing. dont know what the 47x15 and the 55x17 is?

Outside diameter and thickness of the race.
Most bearing/race combos will have dimensions listed this way. I.D. x O.D. x Width

All balls racing has a similar chart and will even prepackage the correct bearings/races for your conversion.

Something to keep in mind, though. Just because you can find bearings to fit an alternate stem in your frame, doesn't mean it will work. You need to consider stem length vs. frame steer tube length. A little difference can be made up for with either spacers or triple clamp machining, but a big difference means you should look for a different stem.

Thanks Face I am aware about the difference in stem length. Is the stem length measured from the top of the bottom bearing?

You'd want to measure from the....bottom.....of the bottom bearing, which would be the top of the lower triple clamp, to the top of the top bearing. This won't be a fixed measurement as most stems have a pair of jamb nuts on the top that will allow for a little bit of height range.

If You can fit your Savage head tube within that range you measured, you're good to go. Stem wise, anyway.

If your stem is too short, Thinner (within reason) triple clamps might help.

Too long, try thicker triples. This assumes a non-tapered section on the stem that you can work with.

Awesome thanks.  ;)
