Title: chain for my chain drive?
Post by wolfsgrin on 10/20/14 at 14:58:07

Hey guys just wondering what size chain you used for the jt sprockets? I got a 540/110 link chain. I need at least a 130 link chain but what about size the 540 is to big to fit into the sprockets teeth.

I don't know about the 540.

I fit a 530 and she's just fine  :)

I think any bike sprocket for most street bikes is a 530 chain.  520 for dirt bikes.

Many sportbike guys will run a 520 chain on their bikes to reduce weight. It will work, but it wont fit on a sprocket made for a 530 chain.

Dirt bikes with more horsepower than the LS650 are running 520 chains as well.  But it will wear quicker usually.

Gives we ride a "thumper", which "thumps" torque on the drive chain...

...and that the torque can be substantial...

I suggest we stick with a 530 chain for a normal Savage, even a 535 for a highly tuned Savage.

A 520 chain could actually fail...

Just Google "motorcycle chain drive fail" and see what you get...  :P

Yeah, for sure, you should do what the mfr suggests. I base many if not all of my comments on experience, not whats best for Joe Schmoe.

Id like to see what real numbers are though, this bike is pretty low power in most regards.  Any chain will fail with time and/or poor maintenance.

I should put a legal disclaimer as a signature.

Spamym, the manufacturer suggests you stick with the OEM belt drive.

We are discussing a chain drive conversion.

We are discussing what chain size is best.

I am strongly supporting the 530 size chain, as I deem 525 borderline safe, and "borderline" to me is NOT safe.
