H/bars look a shade won't,but I don't see what would total it..

Title: Re: My newest build...'98
Post by Demin on 10/03/14 at 04:58:08

Doesn't take much anymore to total anything.
Handlebars, mastercylinder, couple turn signals, tool box cover,Right footpeg and maybe the mount.Fender is scratched.Maybe scratches on the exhaust..etc.
Just looked.Front fender $172.00
Turn signal 60,peg 40,bars 87...Stupid money to replace stock parts,And that's prices from Ron Ayers.
The screwed up part on bikes is they don't just repaint a fender. They replace it with a new one already color matched.

My buddy dropped his 1100 Shadow, put a dent in the gas tank.Thought about turning it in on his insurance.Guy said they would've totaled the bike.Over $1,000.00 for the gas tank, plus the emblems and stuff.

I just looked up the Blue Book value, and if the 98 bike was in excellent condition the Retail Value is $ 1,435....Trade In is $ 920.  So, if you have a $ 1,000 deductible - it is not going to cost the Insurance Company much of anything if they just "Total It"......it is not worth their time to even consider having it repaired.

The fact that it has a "salvage" title doesn't mean it was not repairable....it just means it wasn't economically in the best interest of the insurance agency.

We have a place near here called Racersedge411 that offers up bikes that are either crashed or theft recoveries.  Often the bikes with Salvage titles are completely functional and very nice bikes - I guess they might be Theft Recoveries.....or for some other reason they were written off?  I don't mean to post something Off Topic.....but look at the bikes they have an sometimes you can't understand why a bike has a Salvage title.

Post by Demin on 10/03/14 at 16:29:55

Exactly.I do salvage cars and bikes all the time.Usually when an insurance company writes an estimate,it's all new parts.
The gas tank is dinged up.A new one through Ron Ayers 436 bucks, plus the decals.Doesn't take much.I can either put a used tank on it or fix this one.I will probably fix it.Dings aren't that bad.A little bondo will fix it right up.

Other than mounting front brakes and wrapping the exhaust,it's pretty much done.Made a set of foot pegs out of a bent set of bars and some old grips(I'm a pack rat).

I'm sure that orange looks great in the sunlight & I like how you used two of those cat-eye lights for brake lights  8-)

Title: Re: My newest build...'98
Post by Demin on 10/29/14 at 15:26:52

Thanx.I like a side mount light. To be legal in Ohio, you have to have one on each side.So cars can see you(I know hahaha)from either side.I also run dual filament bulbs in the turn signals that double as brake lights too. 4 brake lights = pretty bright. ;D

Instead of wrapping the exhaust,I opted for high heat black paint.I think it actually looks pretty good.Finished it up,put gas in her, fired her up only to find out...It's Raptor time.
I also think I'm going to have to clean the carb....again.Seems like float is sticking too. >:(

I did a part search.....and the sites indicated the list price was about $ 30, and most were offering it from $ 21 -$ 26....not including shipping.

I imagine if you walk into a dealer it will be about $ 30.....online you will have to deal with some shipping cost and probably end up about $ 30.

At least one eBay seller will sell it to you for $ 24.53 with free shipping...the listing shows it to be a real Yamaha part...hopefully that is what they will ship you.  If it doesn't come in the white Yamaha box....they have done a bait and switch and sent you a fake.

yep. That's why for a couple bucks give or take,I got it fropm Ron Ayers. It will be a Yamaha one.Everything I've ever ordered from there has been factory stuff. And they're usually in the ballpark on price with Ebayers.

Title: Re: My newest build...'98

Around here, the only thing that dealers stock are bikes and gear. They can order the part.It will be there in 3-5 days. And it's all dealers around here.Honda,Harley....etc.We have an Indian/Polaris/Kawasaki dealership in town. They don't even have an oil filter for my 800 Vulcan. They can order it x dollars plus shipping.

That is pretty common for most replacement parts.  Dealers just can't afford to keep a lot of stuff sitting on the shelf.  They may have things that sell often like levers for dirt bikes, oil and air filters, inner tubes, a selection of tires....and lots of choices for oil, cleaners, gloves, jackets, etc.  It is really rare that I can walk in to a dealer and walk out with a part the same day.  I just kind of pick and choose when to order locally or online....bigger orders mostly are done online as I can get a 10% AMA discount with Bike Bandit and don't have to pay sales tax or shipping for bigger orders....and the arrival time is about the same.  I know there is a big controversy about this in the Tall Table area - but when you order form your dealer or Bike Bandit or Ron Ayers or Motorycycle Superstore the rare parts are going to be ordered from the same supplier and will take about the same amount of time to arrive.

Post by Demin on 11/14/14 at 06:45:23

Well...I did the raptor petcock, recleaned the carb, and changed the oil.I still have a top end knock.I was hoping it was due to gas in the oil,but nope.......So it looks like the clutch cover gets removed.Check the pesky tensioner. It's a '98 with just about 14,000 miles.

woofrickinhoo.

Title: Re: My newest build...'98
Post by Demin on 11/14/14 at 14:20:48

Well to my surprise...I have a modified tensioner in it already.Looks like the front guide got twisted or put in crooked. So looks like I gotta pull the head cover now.Might be for the best anyway.Somebody else was in it already and goobed it up with red permatex everywhere.

Did somebody on here wreck a '98 in the Altoona,Pa. area? That's where I picked this one up.

Title: Re: My newest build...'98
Post by Demin on 11/14/14 at 15:12:49

Ok...Question.I've searched and been reading the manual. What holds the front camchain guide in place?
Don't want to pull the headcover off unless absolutely necessary.

The head, it fits into a slot in the cylinder and case.

Post by Demin on 11/14/14 at 15:25:04

I was hoping you would chime in.It's been awhile since I've had one apart.Thanx,I appreciate it it.Time to pull the headcover.Hopefully the guide isn't broken or too chewed up to use.

Title: Re: My newest build...'98
Post by Demin on 11/15/14 at 08:22:00

Front guide was put in upside down. And just set in,not inplace or anything.Gettin' kinda lucky on this rebuild, that nothing is damaged.Couple Heli-coils later.Time to start assembly the correct way.Lucked out and still had a gasket kit too. With a new head gasket.

Title: Re: My newest build...'98
Post by Demin on 11/16/14 at 10:49:11

Still has a knock to it.Sounds like top end.Thinkin' maybe piston slap. When I had the head off,it all looked good. >:(

Title: Re: My newest build...'98
Post by Demin on 11/16/14 at 14:59:43

Ok...Any suggestions???????Almost 14,000 miles. Not too bad at idle. When you rev it or it's under load is when it's noisy.
I've adjusted the valves.Fixed the upside down timing chain guide.Has a modified tensioner already.
Sounds like a rod knock in a car.
Seems to be around the right front of the head.Listening with a wooden dowel.
Piston and valves looked ok with the head off.
Cam and rockers are not worn.

Sorry Demin I have no help to offer, I haven't had the pleasure of tearing into an LS650 engine as of yet.

Title: Re: My newest build...'98
Post by verslagen1 on 11/18/14 at 07:16:45

I had an '88 that knocked, turned out to be a burnt piston.

My guess is piston slap.
It's a big piston, with a short, tight skirt.
excuse me what were we talking about?   :-?

Title: Re: My newest build...'98
Post by Demin on 11/18/14 at 09:42:00

I got the inspection for the salvage title done this morning.I think I'm going to tear it back done and start again.I'll pull the cylinder and all this time.
Thanx anyways Toes.At least I know somebody is reading my thread.

Thanx again Verslagen.I knew you would have an answer.Just second guessing myself,I guess. :-/

Title: Re: My newest build...'98(new questions)
Post by Demin on 12/18/14 at 10:10:25

Ok..Getting ready to tear the top end back down.Presuming it's piston slap.I see Wiseco makes a pistons.I just looked it up $200.00  :o  for 1 piston??????Holy crap. They are out of the 95mm.
I've read some on here about this...How big can I go on a stock cylinder?I read about getting it hardened or something,do I need to do this.I'm not going for performance, just a rebuild.
And is Wiseco the only company for a piston?

Found some for as low as $135.00 shipped.

Time to tear down.

Title: Re: My newest build...'98
Post by Demin on 12/19/14 at 05:02:10

Found what I needed to know under big bore..

Title: Re: My newest build...'98
Post by Dave on 12/19/14 at 05:04:06

Wiseco makes the 95mm and the 96mm....they actually are DR650 pistons that just happen to work in the LS660.  Woessner makes a 97mm.

All of the pistons require boring the cylinder...as the stock LS650 bore is 94mm.

Title: Re: My newest build...'98
Post by Demin on 12/19/14 at 05:23:46

yep.Been reading on this for 2 days.I also found that there is a 1mm over available.I saw it on Ron Ayers.Might go that route since I'm just flipping this one.

Title: Re: My newest build...'98
Post by Dave on 12/19/14 at 06:47:32

Denim:

If you are going to sell the bike....you need to take the cylinder off and see what is wrong.  Maybe you can get by without any oversize piston and cylinder boring if the existing cylinder is good and the piston is just loose or damaged.

Dave

Post by Demin on 12/19/14 at 07:29:29

Yeah.Just getting a game plan for the worst.Going to tear it down this weekend.Whatever it takes.I just like to make sure they are right.I have a pretty good reputation in my parts for quality builds and stuff I sell.

If it was a keeper.I would put a Wiseco piston in and do the cylinder stuff Lancer does.

Title: Re: My newest build...'98
Post by jachase1980 on 12/20/14 at 13:33:49

do you have the link to the front turn signals and possibly the mount brackets for them to the forks?

Title: Re: My newest build...'98
Post by Demin on 12/20/14 at 14:35:38

Here are the turn signals I use.(They are very Bright too)
I am a V-TWIN dealer. You should be able to get them any aftermarket HD shop.

http://www.vtwinmfg.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CatalogSearchResultView?storeId=10101&catalogId=10102&langId=-1&pageSize=10&beginIndex=0&sType=AdvancedSearch&searchTermScope=1&searchTermCaseSensitive=no&searchTermOperator=LIKE&searchType=ALL&searchTerm=33-0665

The brackets are the stock brackets on the front.I made the rear one.Found some hollow tubing at the local hardware store.Bought a tap the is the same threads as the turn signals and tapped threads in it.Welded tabs on to match the fender mounting bolts.

I like the dual elements. On the rears I run them as brake lights on the dimmer side and turn on the brighter side.Along with the regular brake lights.

Title: Re: My newest build...'98
Post by Demin on 12/20/14 at 14:40:20

This bike must have had hard miles put on it.
Piston seems pretty loose in the cylinder.
Piston is  scarred up pretty good.Cylinder doesn't seem too bad.Going to send it out Monday and have it checked to see how big of an over bore I'm going to need.

Title: Re: My newest build...'98
Post by justin_o_guy2 on 12/20/14 at 20:34:20

Maybe run rich, washed the oil off the cylinder,,?

Title: Re: My newest build...'98
Post by Demin on 12/21/14 at 06:06:52

Not so much running rich. But with the float and petcock bad maybe.Good idea, didn't think of that. That makes sense.

Title: Re: My newest build...'98
Post by LANCER on 12/27/14 at 23:45:55

If you can get a Wiseco piston for $135 then grab it, that's a deal.  They no longer sell the 97mm size individually.  They can only be purchased in "lots of 12", so that gets a bit pricy.
They do have the 95 & 96mm sizes available, but it got to where I had trouble getting them in a timely manner from them.
I've been using Wossner for while now and they have been dependable and have all 3 sizes available...for $200 each of course.
They sure are "purdy" though.
