Title: My Savage Project
Post by brownie17 on 10/02/14 at 16:34:12

I don't really know how I started down this road to a Savage project.  I was surfing the internet and started looking at 'bobbers'.   The more I looked, the more I wanted one.  I didn't just want to buy one, I wanted to build one.  Only one problem.... I've never really worked on a motorcycle.  I continued to research them and I stumbled onto Suzukisavage.com.     So with the help of this website, I decided to jump in.  I bought a 2000 LS650 with 11,900 miles.    First thing i did was pull the side cover and check the cam chain tensioner.  It was at 18mm.  It's on it's way to Verslagen's to be modified.

I've got a ton of questions so I'll just throw one out there.   I like to make a custom 'bobber' seat.   I guy I know has an uphosltery shop who will do the upholstering for me but I'm not for sure what thickness seat pan to use?  Any suggestions?

I don't have that answer.. But I do want to welcome you. You're in luck, because there are a bunch of folks here who have been there, done that and can help you along. I'm not a complete idiot either, I'm missing a finger.

After reading a lot of the stuff on here it gave me the confidence to give it a try.    Seems like every subject possible has been covered.  Now I can't wait to start putting it back together.  This is kinda the look I'm going for.

Have you seen Serowboats bike?
Have you ever ridden a fenderless bike? Sand, chunky stuff, water,,the FENDer fends them off.

I definitely think I'm gonna use the stock fender on the front and get a smaller fender for the back.

How do I find Serowboats bike?   I'm still trying to learn how to get around on this website?

I have this shot of Serobot's bike bookmarked.  I love the look of this tracker!  If I didn't need saddlebags for daily use, I would use his bike as a guide for my outcome.

It's the fifth post down in this thread:

While I was tearing down my bike, I made a bonehead move.  I didnt disconnect the battery and when I was trying to take the rear fender off, the starter relay wire hit some metal on the bike and sparked.    The bike would still start after that but I'm wandering if I shorted something out or messed up anything in the wiring.  Any advice???

Tocsik...Man, his bike looks sharp.   I really like the look.  I may have to change my original plans.

Unless you have a problem, sounds like you got away with it.

Advice?

Don't let that happen again.

I go the easy route on seats.Either get a pre made pan or just get a seat.Use the hinge kits available and it will bolt right on the bike.

Alright, I've got a few questions. This pic shows where I'm at in the tear down process. I took the tank off today but I ran into a problem. When I put the petcock in the 'on' position and removed the fuel line, gas still came out. No matter what position I put it in, gas came out. I had to pinch the fuel line with a vice grip to keep fuel from coming out. Any suggestions?

Another question.  Pulled the clutch cover. I've sent the cam chain tensioner to be modified. It won't be back for a while but I'm wandering what's the best way to remove the old gasket without doing damage to the engine?

Update on my Savage project.... Got the clutch cover gasket,  oil filter and header gasket.  Now I just need my Verslavy so I can start putting this thing back together.  I have absolutely no experience working on motorcycles but with the help of everyone on this website, I'm giving it a go.  Thanks everyone! !

I sanded my fenders and side covers.  I had a hell of a time getting the decals off the tank.   Finally used a heat gun and decided to strip the tank.
