A clamp that is not referrenced in the repair book has broken, it seems to be there to clamp to itself but maybe someone here knows what it is for. It was on the exhaust pipe near the front of the heat shield.

IIRC that square hole fits on a lug inside the heat shield,,

Just the opposite, there is a tab on the exhaust pipe that the square hole fits over. Then the other side, which is broken off goes up under the heat shield, the broken off pice still there or fallen off. Been riding for a couple of weeks and the shield is still tight and the muffler to exhaust pipe clamp is still tight and holding...

besides the clamp, there are 2 screws if I remember correctly.

2 screws for the heat shield? Don't know but you think the clamp is for the shield?

I am thinking it's for the heat shield and broken off in parts/pieces.

I saw that too but on my bike the part number 13 attaches to the exhaust pipe and not the heat shield. The other half goes way up and under the heat shield. Must be a redesign that isn't in the books yet...

On a side note, I wonder what is keeping the heat shield attached to the bike...

Look at the screws, #11. If I recall correctly when I removed mine...those screw thru the muffler brackets into the shield and tie in the heat shield to the muffler. Hard to see if you can't get behind the muffler to see them.

That clamp is from the front of the muffler heat shield...it used to clamp onto the header and yours is broken off the shield...it used to be attached. The muffler has two bolt holes and 2 bolts (part number 11 in the parts diagram you posted) that attaches to the top of the heat shield....that is what is currently holding the shield to your muffler.
