Title: Vest fell onto my exhaust, is there a fix?
Post by GridMonkey on 09/28/14 at 17:26:09

Hey all,

So i was riding this afternoon and it got chilly, pulled over took my vest off and put on a long sleeve shirt i had packed in my bags, turned around and watched my vest fall onto my my muffler. Snatched it up quickly but as we all know any time on a hot pipe is too much time. There isnt a hole in it but a pretty large pucker, has anyone had this happen/ any thoughts on how to fix it, or am i stuck with a vest with a pucker in it? Ill get a pick once my phone gets some more charge. Thanks

Luke

Serow, yea i thought of that, but it's a pretty nice vest, happens to be the one i wear when i'm standing with Patriot Guard riders for flag lines and such. It's on the back left shoulder blade, worn just above where i have some pretty good road rash from before i own'd a vest and dumped a bike some years ago. (that coincidence is not lost on me...) I mean, if not then there is nothing i can do but I'm sure its happened to others on here so figured id ask if anyone had some trick.

Sure it's a nice vest, but are you SURE that it's real leather?  That behavior looks like something a polyvinyl material might do.  Either way, I'm not sure you have much hope of restoring it to it's original condition.

You might find a tailor who can sew leather, and see if they could cut and patch the affected area.  Find a fun or quirky motorcycle patch to cover the repair if you think it's an eyesore.  :D

That's the best I've got.

I'm not sure but i think if it was in fact polyvinyl it would be a puddle on the ground and a gaping hole in the vest, i had been riding for about 2 hours and my jardine gets super hot, I have caught polyvinyl rain pants on the pipe and they vaporize. This actually does, to me, look like a flesh blister, just no water in it so it didn't pop up like a living animal burn blister. It was from a local leather merchant and when i get back that way i'm going to ask them if they have thoughts as well.

I'm not sure anything will restore it to original shape... but, rubbing alcohol is good for stretching leather shoes....

I've seen leather draw up. I don't know if that Is leather, but, wouldn't vinyl have Stuck?
First thing I'd do is find an edge of the material or,hey, read the tag?

Was it loose to start with?  If so iron the entire vest making it match and fitting better  ;D

I had to look into it; I didn't know that leather shrunk like that with heat.  I've seen nylon and vinyl brush against exhaust and shrink without sticking (though certainly not every time), so my experience is what I expected.

I searched for a while, and lots of people seem to say that water or leather conditioning cream should be used to soften it, then you can stretch it.  Maybe this will help:

If all else fails......the road racer folks send their stuff to Anthony's Leather Works for repair.

Try wetting the area and see if it will stretch out. Take your time and let the water really soak into the leather. After that a good leather treatment to soften it back up.

I knew leather shrunk cuz I was trying to dry rain soaked gloves after a rain and they just barely even went on my hands. I d rub mink oil in it,dehydrate, maybe even a little water first.. If there is an old boot and shoe place, start there.
