Has anybody taken the baffles out to the dyna on their bike? If so how did you do it and how did it sound afterwards?

I removed the freeze plug thing that directs the exhaust through the baffles by sliding a pipe in the in and out the out. It was freakin' loud. It effectively becomes a straight pipe. I had also drilled a hole in it before removing it. That allowed it to become louder without being obnoxious. I can't remember if it was a 3/8" or 1/2" hole though.

What I am using now is perfect for me. I picked up some HD exhaust pipe for custom applications. It was a leftover scrap piece. It is 1.75" OD. I had it enlarged ever so slightly to fit the header. I stuck an 8" universal baffle in it. I put one slit at the inlet to help clamp to the header. No gasket. No leaks. Perfect loudness. Not real deep sounding, but not tinny either. Almost perfect there.

The DYNA has a 1-1/4 metal pipe down the center, with an outer chrome shell. The metal pipe has a metal plug in the middle of the pipe, and a series of holes on the front and back of that plug. The exhaust travels down the pipe until it gets to the plug, then flows out the holes to the space between the pipe and the outer chrome shell, and then it flows back through the holes behind the plug into the center tube.....and then out the back.

If you want more noise....then drill a hole in that plug. You need a long drill sometimes called an "aircraft drill". You can also use a standard drill bit held into an extension. Start with a small hole about 1/4", and you can make it larger if you want more sound.

Some folks will insert a metal rod and use a hammer and drive the plug out....which pretty much just makes it a very loud straight through pipe that looks like a muffler. There actually won't be an "muffle" going on once you drive the plug out.

I have a Dyna that's been debaffled.
It's an HD take-off with some scratches.
If you would like to try it, it's yours for the shipping cost.
Ear plugs are extra.

You know you can fix that easy-peasy! Get a freeze plug....1-1/4 I believe, and you just drive it back where the old plug used to be.

I thought the word on the street (a.k.a. this forum) was that we needed the baffles for proper back pressure? Now you guys are teasin' me with this discussion. :D :D

I installed my dyna a few weeks ago and really like it as is and wouldn't want it any louder, and don't plan on making any modifications...just curious if I misunderstood the need for the baffles.

Thanks for the tip on the freeze plug.
I bought my Dyna muffs as a pair;
one with the baffle (freeze plug), and one without.
I installed the one with the baffle because I knew about
the problems and issues with re-tuning for a straight-through
muffler and because I didn't want the raucous noise.
So ...
I have the debaffled muffler sitting here and anyone is
welcome to it. It even has the preferred mounting rail for
fitting to the Savage. Your tip on the freeze plug may come
in handy to someone who tries it.

If you want a tuneable louder pipe, the HD screaming eagle may fit the bill. I'm currently running a short one that just has a plain steel tube baffle with a large indentation on one end. Power seems as fine as my last HD muffler, and sound is PLENTY. It's just on the cusp of "Maybe I should be wearing earplugs."

Just food for thought.

I bought a 3 1/2" hard krome slash cut from lancer some years back
it has no diverter plug, or fiber in it just a metal honey comb tube
I can keep the noise down around the neighbor hood
out on the highway fellow riders don't like being in my wake

How easy is it to get the screaming eagle to mount up? I found a set with no baffles for really cheap and if mounting is easy I may buy them

There are many different models of Screamin' Eagle mufflers that are
bolt-on replacements for stock HD mufflers.
If the SC mufflers you found are replacements for the Dyna mufflers with
the rail mount as shown in the post above then they will probably mount
up okay.
