You don't have the gun yet....

You bought a holster... ;D...

...but, it's a step... :-?...

Have you taken a Motorcycle Safety course?...
You might want to try that before pulling the trigger on a bike of your own...
Some people find that riding is nothing like what they imagined...

PS... nice helmet... FF... smart choice... ;)...

Took the course when I was 18 (but wasn't allowed to take the test  :o) Took the class again back in June. Long story short: Worst weather on testing day possible, almost cancelled. Passed it without a problem. Teachers were cool, one knew I had been riding quads for years and was casual with me. Talked food and restaurants at a lot of the stops and breaks. A few other students had been riding for years without a license and said they had no idea how I was so smooth and quick. 8-) During the box S turn test (Which I aced!) other students were asking how I did that. Many were single footing it or going outside. It was cold and sleeting that day so most of us were nervous about sliding and we were all VERY stiff, wet and chilled. Loved the TU250X I tested on!
I tried many different helmets, read the reviews and found this one worked best for me. I wanted hi-vis as I want to stand out like a circus clown at a shareholders meeting! Going for a hi-vis jacket next.

Nice Hat ! :)

Yellow is a very good color . ;)

I want to hear more about the TU250 , did it have more than enough power ?   If I replace my s-40 , the TU is a prime candidate .

I have one of those!  can't use it anymore though, I wrecked in it, it still looks good though, one of the most comfortable helmets I've ever had.

in general helmets should be replaced every 5 years or so, clocks ticking. . .  8-)

I'm checking out a 2003 on Thursday. :D Only 1,593 miles on it.
MM: The TUX was a very nice bike. Stable, fuel injected, nice mild torque, only about 16HP though. It can do highway speeds but from all I've heard, it takes a bit of redlining to try and get it there quickly. I will say the front brakes are pretty big and strong. I'm 5' 10" and it was very comfortable ergonomically. I think it could be lightened up a bit though.

Also interested in a view, on the TU250.
Before the S40.  I was looking at the TU250.
The 225, It certain times, and in certain places,
it just didn't quite do the job.

And all the reports, the TU would be the same

(The S40, no problem).

I don't care If I look like a 'monkey riding a peanut'
(as some, have pointed out). I didn't ask,
nor do I need, their permission.

I like the idea of the TU250,
Light, Exc MPG. Injected,

But, when I am cruising along at 60,
and hit this hill, and their is a 30MPH headwind.
Will be be struggling to get to 45 when I hit the top.
Which was the 225,  but Not the S40.

Another view, if someone has experience.
Thanks.

I have owned a couple of 250 two-stroke singles, and a more recent 4 stroke dual sport single.  They are great bikes for riding around town, back country roads....anywhere you want to go at 50 mph or less and they do a great job.  On the flat interstate roads you can get up to 60 -70 mph...but you sure do feel like you are punishing the bike.  When you hit the off-ramp and slow down.....I swear I can hear a sigh of relief from the little bikes.  If you ride in area with steep hills, they will slow down on the hills.

The little 250 Ninja I bought recently does a much better job than the singles do.  It can handle 70 mph on the interstate easily, and around town or country roads it is civilized and putts along nicely.  On the first tank at the last Dragon Ride I got 77 mpg for the only tankful that I checked.  The 250 Ninja forum claims 200-250 miles of range from full until you hit reserve.

I like the looks of the TU250 best.....but the performance on the Ninja 250 is hard to beat for a little bike!

BOOM! Pulled the trigger. 2003, 1,592 miles, never dumped, stored inside, just needs a good riding session to blow the cobwebs out. Handles beautifully. These are pleasantly torquey! 8-) Going to ride it until it gets too cold then tinker with it over the winter. Thanks for all the advice gang!

That's a good idea to ride it until it's too cold. Then you can look at some maintenance. It's a lovely looking STOCK bike. Just hope you've checked the oil level. Given its age it wouldn't hurt to check battery condition as well and look at tyres for any sign of aging. Enjoy the rides. Remember, some of our experts say they will use oil if ridden continually at 75mph or above.

Title: Re: cocked the gun
Post by Jeff71 on 09/25/14 at 23:23:53

I did check the oil; looking good. I will keep an eye on it over the next month.
The PO's father in law owned the bike and had a cold weather battery tender installed (got that in the deal too!) The tires look great. Only a little surface rust on the chrome panel above the muffler connection. Not a scratch on it!
The exhaust has a little crackle to it but I'm almost sure it's the nature of the bike and that it hasn't been run a lot. I think it needs an Italian tune up to hopefully blow any crud out of the engine/ carb.
Found it only 12 miles from our house. :)
I'll keep everyone in the loop. My helmet was very nice too. Have to get a riding jacket and some better boots next. Just going to ride and enjoy it!

Nice bike. Enjoy!

If you are like me and want to attack every little speck of rust, I found that this stuff works well, and it seems to be pretty safe on chrome and doesn't eat up your paint if you accidentally drip some on it...just wipe it off.  Drip some on the rust and let it 'fizzle' and then rinse with water afterwards...or you can take off nuts and bolts and soak them in it.

You can get it at HD/Lowes in a small 8oz bottle for a few bucks.

Or.....a little white vinegar and a piece of aluminum foil.  Dip the aluminum foil in the vinegar and rub - and you won't believe how fast the rust goes away!  Then wash off the vinegar and black residue before it dries.

At the risk of being boringly repetitious, you have three friends, your two mirrors and the big gap in front of, and where possible around you. Your IRC tyres are relatively unknown acquaintances, they aren't worthy of total trust.

For this month I'm only going to be driving around my neighborhood. I am new to this and new to the bike. I will be going to our local church parking lot and practicing. I'm under no rush and I want to do things right. I just ordered the Clymer manual and am going to go over the bike in detail this next week. Over winter I'll see what needs to be done and take my time.

Picked up a few quarts of Rotella T6, a new filter and have a new battery on order. Took it out for a few miles the other day. Bought a nice pair of boots today and am looking for a jacket. Not a lot of shops in my area to try a variety on. >:( Started going over the bike in detail, marking down bolt sizes, tools needed, wire routing etc. Really a better bike than I expected. :D

Title: Re: cocked the gun
Post by MMRanch on 10/13/14 at 00:06:46

congrats Jeff

That bike is Almost NEW !  :o

 :o

Do keep the idle up to at least 1000 , prefered 1200 rpm  .    It will keep the cam bearing oiled and it will last 50k miles or more!  ;)
With my first one I fell to the temptation to idle it down low so it sounded good at redlights.   Then  the cam began to rattle, I found out
the hard way  :(.   I have another one now and you can be sure it stays idled up.    I took it apart at 40-something thousand miles and there wasn't even a ring grove.   About 15000 miles you need to do the "Versey" cam chain thing , until then just ride it and enjoy.  :)

Feels like a 250 bike , but it don't slowdown going up hill !   What more could ya ask for ?  :)

Title: Re: cocked the gun
Post by Jeff71 on 10/13/14 at 08:01:39

It idles high on it's own. Once warmed up it goes very nicely. It does need a good Italian tune-up. Once my new battery gets here I'll hook that up and get the oil changed. Then it will be buzzed around the neighborhood until it gets too cold. I haven't even opened it up very far yet. I'm a very controlled learner/ rider.
About the only thing I could ask for with it is a better riding position. I prefer the standard or cafe' position. The cruiser position on this one, especially how the grips angle down, makes my hands slide off a touch. Instead of pushing into a turn it feels more like pulling. :-?

Loosen the cap nuts over the top of the clamp that holds the handle bars and move the thing to the most comfortable position for you.

Yes, Virginia, the handlebars and the rear brake petal height and the toe shifter heights are intended to be adjusted to fit YOUR body.

Okay, i'll fall.... what is an "Italian tune up"? :-?

Title: Re: cocked the gun
Post by Jeff71 on 10/13/14 at 18:56:42

It goes something like this. Many early Ferrari owners would bring their cars back after a few seasons reporting sluggishness, erratic running, backfires etc... The mechanics knew (almost too well) what to do. The customer would leave the car with them for a few days. The mechanics would take the cars out and flog the hell out of them for 50 miles or so; going the gears, pushing the redline, hard downshifting etc... Essentially, they were blowing the built up carbon and junk out of the engine and carbs. The owners, not privy to a racetrack, had no place to wind them out and were pretty much putting around, clogging the engines. They would get the cars back a few days later and be in awe of the mechanic's skill at "tuning" their Ferraris. ;)
Early Porches and 911s usually didn't like to run under 3,000 RPM, the amazing 4 cam engines were never supposed to be run under 5,000RPM :o (Those 4 cams were sexy as hell!)
So that's what an Italian tune up is. My bike only had 144 miles a year put on it and I think it could use a good rowing through the gears. 8-)
Jeff

Title: Re: cocked the gun
Post by jcstokes on 10/14/14 at 00:12:40

Since you're still under 500miles the attached table may help with the Italian tune up.

Post by Jeff71 on 10/14/14 at 20:28:17

Actually I have just over 1600 miles on the bike. I put all of 22 miles of that on it! ;D
Just got my new battery so I'll get that installed Friday, then once the roads dry a touch I'll get the oil changed. :)
Jeff

Title: Re: cocked the gun
Post by Jeff71 on 10/16/14 at 14:38:25

Just swapped the battery out and as I was measuring stuff, my Raptor arrived. Since the battery was out I got the petcock in..in about 15 minutes, including draining the tank!
The new battery took a little work getting spacers and padding in the battery box as the size was a touch smaller. Notice the PO's lovely decal on the old battery. ;D http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii173/mode4eng/batteries_zps8dd7888a.jpg (http://s264.photobucket.com/user/mode4eng/media/batteries_zps8dd7888a.jpg.html)
I put the key in and I think the headlight burned a hole in the wall. The old battery was SERIOUSLY on it's way out! I bumped the starter and it REALLY turned over! I'll take it out tomorrow for a spin and do an oil change then. 8-)
Jeff

Title: Re: cocked the gun
Post by Jeff71 on 10/23/14 at 22:25:32

Did my first oil change today. Went smooth other than the PO cranking the drain bolt on too tight. My 14mm wrench scraped the flats off a bit. Made a 9/16 closed end work. (My closed-end 14mm, where did you go?) The oil looked like a thick Guinness. :-? Drove it about 30 minutes beforehand, changed it, then went out for another 30. Took it to the local park (that was empty) and did some S curves and practice turns; just getting a better feel of things. Actually scraped the peg at one point. :)
It still has a little hesitation but I know it needs some quality miles put on it. The hardest thing I found is that it doesn't want to go under 15MPH without feathering the clutch. :)
The weather is supposed to be nice this weekend. Have to go fill the tank and get some more miles on it.

I have bought a couple of rear wheel hubs from Pinwall Cycles, give them a call at (330) 879-9910.  They are great folks and easy to deal with.

I really think you should ride this bike for a year before you tear it apart.  You need to get some experience riding and get some miles and hours of riding time, and become a proficient rider before you jump on a Cafe' bike.  They are a bit less stable than the stock bike, they put a large amount of weight on your arms and wrists, the seating position is not all that comfortable, and they are really nasty to ride in wet weather.  I like my Cafe' bike and never regret making the change - but you will have an easier time learning to ride the bike in stock form.

The RYCA kit is a good start - but it does require a good bit of mechanical ability to get it together, and this not only includes cutting the frame in several places - but also some creative wiring and fitting of the components.  RYCA claims an assembly time of about 40 hours, and I suspect you could do that in the 4th or 5th bike if you were not to critical about getting things done neatly.  Lengthening and shortening the wires takes a long time to get done neatly.  Trying to assemble a bike with painted tank, fenders, and side panels would be really scary....as there is lots of fitting and adjustment to be done.....I don't know how you could do that without damaging the painted parts somewhere along the way.

Your stock Savage is a fun and reliable machine, and you should ride it for a year and make sure you like it.....then consider the RYCA Cafe conversion.  I bought my bike and rode it for a full year before it went under the knife.....and I have no regrets about doing that.  The first year I rode it stock and worked on getting it jetted and running well, the second winter it got the Cafe' conversion and was ridden in primer for a year as I got the mechanical things done, and the 3rd winter it was painted.

One other thing to consider, is that just about every new rider is going to drop a bike as they are learning.  It might be a slippery pile of leaves and a front brake issue......or a gravel encounter........or a throttle/clutch engine stall on a driveway approach....who knows?  The point is that getting proficient on a motorcycle takes time and patience, and the Savage in the stock form is a better bike to learn on than the Cafe bike.  I learned to ride in the dirt and strip mines where I grew up, and just about every day I would have a learning experience of some sort.  Dirt is very forgiving and with lots of protective gear injuries were not common - asphalt and concrete are not nearly as forgiving.

Get a year of riding experience.....and you will be less likely to drop your newly created Cafe' bike!

(Just the advice of an old guy that has been around the block a few times).

Dave

No....in my youth (1970 - 1975) I rode several forms of motocross bikes. and raced in hill climbs, motocross and hare scrambles.  I bought my first trials motorcycle around 2005 and it was a 1974 Suzuki RL250....really just an enduro with a skinny tank, small seat...not much of a trials bike.  Around 2008 I bought a used 2004 Sherco 290 two stroke, then in 2009 I bought a Sherco 320 four stroke bike.  It was a lot of fun...sure wish I had done the trials riding in my youth.

You ever thought : How would it do to have a Trials Bike with a real seat on it ?    I remember those Yahama Enduro's , with their wide seats and short frames.   Wouldn't it be fun to have a motor that could cruse at 70 on one of those ? :)

Title: Re: cocked the gun
Post by Jeff71 on 10/28/14 at 09:53:25

Dave, I got the tank from Pinwall! :) They have a wheel I might be considering as well.
I'll be riding it as it is for awhile, I'm just getting the parts together so when I go to do it, I won't have so much bike downtime. My plan is to build it but paint it later. Want to work all the bugs out first.
As far as riding, I grew up on a mini-bike then 2 quads and now a bunch of VW's, kit cars, dune buggies etc, so I'm no stranger to a wrench, welder or wire stripper. 8-) I've rewired at least 3 VWs so far. ;)
The riding position I had on the TUX was nice but I wanted it more forward, the Savage is too "laid back" for me and crotch rockets are just like laying down over the tank. Sitting on a Thruxton and Moto Guzzi fit me very well. My wife took shots of me on each bike so I can see the ergonomics. Sounds funny, but I watched Jay Leno ride one and we are basically the same height, so I went with that as a comparison and it suited the angle I would want to be at. :)
I won't be carving any corners since I live in Illinois and will just be commuting to work, which is 99% straight roads and only about 8 miles, round trip. Probably a max of 45MPH most of the way.
Right now I need to give the bike another onceover and make sure all is tight and snug. Tightened up a few screws and repositioned a few wiring connections to limit rubbing so far. Very happy with my purchase.
I appreciate the input!
Jeff

You're working too hard.  Go to the Napa or similar auto store, and get paint stripper.  Something like Tal Strip or Aircraft stripper.  It will have the paint off in 15 minutes.  Apply, let it sit ten minutes, use a putty knife to remove the paint, clean it up with some stripper and heavy steel wool, wipe it clean with wet rags and then lacquer thinner.

Got the rear wheel and unbolted the rim in about an hour between classes. 8-) Now I just need to figure out the best way to polish up the hubs. Any suggestions crew?
The tank is coming along.
Ryca just had a sale so I placed an order. 4-6 weeks once I get the parts out to them. No big rush though; unheated garage in Illinois. It's 25.2* outside right now. Have the new Acewell gauge, extra brake light and bar end lights coming. Still looking for a set of mirrors.
Jeff

Title: Re: cocked the gun
Post by Jeff71 on 11/14/14 at 16:28:45

Got the bar lights and Acewell. I need to figure out the proper wire on the bike to connect to for the keyed switch, what side of the fuse, etc... :)
I did figure out where to hook up the magnet for the speedo. It's too big to fit on the front disk; no clearance. So I'm going to fab up a little bracket and have it held on by the bolts that hold on the rear drive pulley. I'll put a bracket across from it as well for balance. The speed sensor will be mounted on the inside of the trailing arm. Should be simple and clean. :)
Need to finish stripping the tank and work on that dent a little. If it won't budge, Ryan said they could knock it out when they cut the tank.

Found a box at my in-laws. Thought it would be perfect for storing parts. :)

Went jacket shopping today. Tried on the REV' IT! Tornado. Fits nice! Will probably get it in hi-vis yellow. Checked out the Heidenau tires as well. I like them! :)
Back to work on the front hub tomorrow.

I bought a Hi Vis jacket a few years back, the boneheads around here seem attracted to it, any time I wear it I have more close calls than when wearing my black leather jacket
YM of course MV

Well I got the jacket a few weeks back. It fits perfectly and is quite bright. The bike will be painted Schwinn red and I'll be putting reflective graphics on it.

Thought you guys would like to see the small graphic I designed for the back of the bike. :) Only about 2" across.

This is my last post on this thread. Ryan e-mailed me saying my parts are ready. I sent my final payment to him yesterday and I should have my parts next week. I'll be starting a new thread with video links and pictures of my build. It will be in a link below. Very excited! 8-)

P.S. Just ordered a set of Heidenau K36 4.00-18 64H TL Tires from Revzilla. :D
